Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Epic worth snagging?

I'm pretty new to cycling and have a Trek hybrid for family outings but have also been looking for a used (like many budget is a big consideration) road bike to ride with some friends and for fitness. While passing a pawn shop today I noticed a couple of bikes outside and one was this Specialized Epic. I don't know the year and it has some wear but nothing looked too serious. There was one small, short gouge on the top tube that took paint off but it didn't look deep.

The manager said $125 out the door and I think I could get it a bit lower. I'm 5'6" and its a little tall for me but ride-able. I figure if its too uncomfortable I could at least get my money back if I had to re-sell.

Shimano 105 components, Mavic wheels, and the shifter said 7-speed. Any comments and year info are appreciated.

Bikes: ...a few.

I've spent more than that on that particular 105 groupset for my 1987 Gardin upgrade already. Take it. Worse case you can take off the components and sell them off on eBay. People like me will buy them for silly projects. You'll more than make back your purchase.

It looks to be in great shape. For $125 I would take it if it fit me or anyone in my family. It looks to be a 54cm (guessing) so it might be a little big for you. All bearings (wheels, bottom bracket and headset) will need to be checked and regreased. Cables, chain and tires should be inspected before riding too. Good luck!

A steel Epic for $125? I'd buy it faster than you can blink!

In case it's not totally obvious, the bike can be adjusted to make a smaller fit. But assuming you already tried that, and still feel that the fit is too large for you, I'd personally pass on the deal. I'd rather pay more money and get a better fit.

It's carbon, but still! At least the main tubes are carbon. It's hard to remember. Fork is ??? aluminum maybe?

In my opinion, this is the #1 mistake I see people make when buying something new or used - buying the wrong size. The right size is far more important to me than any other factor (other than safety).

If the seat is just adjusted to high, and lowering to parallel with the bars causes it to fit, then it fits well. If you need the seat to be noticeably higher or lower than the handlebars, I wouldn't get it. I bought a new bike in high school that was a little to big for me, thinking I would keep growing (and I didn't), and it was really nice when I bought a new slightly smaller bike.

20 year old carbon bike with a gouge on the top top? Good luck with that. But yes if you just want to flip it is certainly worth it to buy and strip it down and sell groupset and components on ebay. If the rear spacing is 126mm it's hard to find good wheels in good condition with 126mm rear hub so you might even get $125 for the wheelset from the right buyer

This likely is a 1992 or maybe 1991 since its seven speed. It's in very good shape and these bikes have a crowd in the nostalgic bunch. I would jump on it and ride it if it fits. If it doesn't you can easily sell for $250-$300 in that shape.

oops! sorry, it looked steel in the pics. I didn't realize Specialized had a carbon tube bike in '93.

+1000 a good deal isn't worth it if you suffer trying to ride.

91 would have had DT shifters. In 1992 the only brifters were Dura-Ace. Hard telling how much of the parts are original, though. I'm gonna have to delve into some catalogs.

Seems like a 1994 Epic Comp.

But they did come with 8-speed 105 brifters.
