Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Ksyrium SLE vs Shimano Dura Ace C24

Still looking for new wheels. I am now looking to get either the Dura Ace C24 or the Mavic Ksyrium SLE. Does anyone have experience with the Mavic Exalith braking surface and pads? Is it worth the money ($1500). The Ksyrium SLR are not as good looking, but a couple of hundred less than the SLE. The Dura Ace are about 1200. Any input would be much appreciated.

both are great wheels, but the mavics will give you a harsher ride than the DA. I have used both, and am amazed at how much of a difference there is. I ended up using my ksyriums as crit wheels, and have only used the c24's on my non-racing rides since. my ksyriums were older (not exalith), but the spoke style, material, and design are consistent with the newer ones, so i'd expect the same result.

I don't know about the "good looking" part. To me, if you like a blacker wheel, the SLE's look downright killer. But if you're looking for a bright finish, then Dura Ace are more attractive. (I like black wheels, myself)

I probably wouldn't pay the extra for the SLE brake technology just cuz the replacement pads are so expensive but I'd only be shopping Ksyrium Elites anyway. (bang for the buck)

(shrug)

I would go Shimano DA C24 because of the build quality. (Not that Mavics are bad, but Shimano wheels are TOUGH!) But if you're a racer I'd be willing to bet the Mavics would be faster. (Rims are where the weight differences are here, and same depth)

Bikes: not enough

I'm eyeing aluminum braking surface rims for special use.. and so far it's going to be C24's for me.

Mavics often test out heavier than advertised and less aero than similar wheels from other manufacturers.
