Road vs Mountain bikes and a question of speed (rant)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

and all else being equal, a $10K road bike is faster than a $150 Huffy mountain bike, but not by much. I'm not sure if the Huffy is equipped with "Magna action" suspension forks or not, or if this is before or after someone takes the time to disassemble it and grease everything.

Also, progressive riders in the TDF and Giro are going to ditch their bikes in favor of longboards on the downhill sections in the near future due to speed increases.

At least that is my take home message.

I suggest Choogis ask about bike speeds in the recumbent forum.

Around here we have more MTB riders than roadies. If you ride with a semi-pro MTB on the open road with any kind of hills he will hand you your hind end an hour later when you catch up to him/her.

I held my mtb up on one side of me, and my road bike on the other. Then I let go of them and said "Go!".
I didn't attempt to influence the results; I released both of them at the same time.
They both fell down.
What went wrong?

Since mtn bikes are involved, weed must be as well. You must be imagining it in your haze

My mountain bike is most definitely substantially faster than my road bike. On single track that is.... the road bike is in fact faster on the road, but it's still a lot slower than my R6.

This is like arguing which is a faster swimmer, a shark or a kangaroo.
