Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lucky you. I haven't seen temperatures above 50 for a couple months, and don't expect to see any until the end of next month.

Sorry to hear that but it could happen anytime. I wouldn't let it stop you. You know have the first scratch out of the way so now you can go out and enjoy and not worry about scratching it, etc.

It did feel good though to be out getting some exercise...
That wind alone would be enough to keep me off the bike. Good on ya if you like it.

You need to retire. i ride in Houston as soon as rush hour subsides in the summer.

Here in PA, the day started @ 0. -20 windchill. Yesterday wasn't much different. Snow on the ground, and plenty of ice. I've been on the trainer religiously, and it does suck. I have a bunch of riding videos and a nice movie collection along with cable T.V. in my garage. Up until 3 weeks ago, I was mountain biking on the weekends. I tried to MTB Saturday being in the 20's but did a good bit of walking do to the ice. I usually sign up for a race or two right around this time to motivate me. Keep your head down..

I turn off once the temps.hit freezing. I have gear to be comfortable down to that point, but need a few things to go lower. All my friends switch to strictly mtn biking in the winter for the most part, and while it is fun I miss the pavement. I'll still commute (again, as long as it is above freezing). My poor synapse hasn't seen any action for months

I joined a local gym last month and have been attending spin classes 5 times a week. In the 5 weeks, i've dropped 15lbs and and burned 11,000 calories. I'm also able to stay out of the saddle much longer than before.

I expect when i hit the road in March i'll be more fit and stating off at a much higher level.

get use to it. until the current solar minimum ends, winters will get colder and last longer. and the last time it was this bad it lasted a few centuries and triggered the last mini ice age during the middle ages. and....unfortunately tree rings tell us that the west suffered a extremely dry drought during the same period, that lasted for 5-8 decades.
My solution. a huge heated pipeline that extends from the east traveling across the plains and over the Rockies and the Sierras. all the way to the west coast, to ship melted snow and ice to the drought areas. And on top of this heated pipeline will be built a heated multi lane asphalt bike trail which will be constantly free from snow and ice for all to enjoy. even during the coldest and snowiest days. of course there will be a hefty tax to pay for this but it will be worth it.

Although I am impressed and admire your resolve unless you have 4 ft of snow on the ground, wake up to -10 F and 30 mph winds (gusts to 60 mph) Long Island is not New England....even "temperate" northern CT. Just sayin'.

I'm with you. I usually do some rail/trail riding on my cross bike but for some reason did hardly any this year. For me it's off to the gym for lifting and some spinning videos. I do not have the fortitude of Fly2High for instance.

In my stupidity, I mean youth, I once decided to ride my motorcycle through a northern CT winter. That ended when I was coming back from visiting my mother in Hackensack, NJ in January. As I was heading east on I-84 in Hartford, CT the bike started this gentle rocking motion and I thought, "Damn a flat." I was in the passing lane in traffic at about 60 mph. Looked down and realized I was on black ice. Fortunately I was calm about the whole thing and gently eased the bike over to the right lane where there was no ice. That was my last day on a motorcycle in weather below 35 F.

Yes, I'm speaking figuratively, not literally. The NE has been utterly buried in snow this Winter with storm after storm rolling through. I do feel their pain as my own area has had snow, wind, and cold with little reprieve in sight.

Woke up this morning...

and saw more *****in snow... 10 day forecast has snowfall for 6 days... depression is kicking in. Rarely has a NYC winter produced so much snow in my time here. I badly need a set of rollers but space is such an issue in this overcrowded, overpriced, bedbug infested hellhole of a city.

And that is why I feel your pain, even before you mentioned the bedbugs.
