Should I continue if I'm really sore?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I continue if I'm really sore?

I've been cycling for about three weeks now and every day I'm kind of sore.

However, the past three days I've cycled for 3+ hours and I've gotten increasingly sore.

Should I just continue or should I give my legs some time to rest?

Thanks!

depends on why you are sore. If you are sore from over use of the muscle, then take a rest day or 2 (or do a lighter intensity recovery ride).
If you are sore from not being properly hydrated or fueled then you need to look at your nutritional intake.
Trust what your body tells you. When you over use muscles, be it cycling or weight lifting, it is wise to allow the body to heal. Its always good to take a day off to stretch, do some myofacia release, etc.

you can reduce the effectiveness of those 3+ hour rides by not giving your body enough time to recover/heal.

Moreover, you'll find what works best for you as everyones body responds differently.

Cheers,
J

Why do you need internet strangers to tell you this? Listen to your body and make a decision.

Use some lube and relax the muscles. It's much easier if you have a patient partner.

Relax in a hot bath and take a day off.

If you just started cycling and have gone every single day for 3 weeks, your body needs to recover. You are building your base, so it's not too surprising your muscles are sore. They also need a day off to rebuild. I typically take off 2 days per week, Mon & Fri and go to the gym. Since Sat is a hard, long ride I like to be fresh. Then after 2 long rides on the weekend, Mon is a chance to rebuild and refresh. Also, not every ride should be a hard, balls to the wall type ride. Long easy spins are good to mix in during the week.

If it's not just your leg muscles that are sore, then you need to give more detail.

You are supposed to take a rest day every so often ... to allow your muscles to rebuild and thus become stronger.

I too would say rest/ recover/ read up on overtraining. It can slow your improvement time working too hard.

^^this. Things need to heal and rebuild every now and again. It's fun to ride every day, but your body still needs some rest occasionally.

Another reason you might be sore is that your bike does not fit your body or it hasn't been set up correctly for you.

get one of these: amazon link: muscle roller to roll out those sore muscles. Take some magnesium supplements. Drink more water. Rest once in a while.
