Yes, my setup (39-29) calculates to 36-37 gear inches which is at the high end of recommendations for riding hills. A compact would lower it to 32-33 gear inches which concurs with recommendations....

There's a difference from the mechanics...

There's a difference from the mechanics perpective, not so much from the rider. Replacing little black boxes might not seem attractive (not to mention expensive) to the DIY mechanic.

But cars developed anti-lock brakes so that the front wheels wouldn't lock up under slippery conditions. Bikes have no such feature and the front wheel will lock much easier in wet than dry pavement.
