It isn't really the same.. Bikes are pretty quiet and they very well may not hear you. Also, if I'm in bike/ped path here the peds are often taking the whole thing up, so a beep is mandatory.

1) you don't care when it gets scratched up
2) it is cheaper to buy
3) crooks are less likely to steal...
