Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Soul S2.0/GP4000s/Veloplug build

I just received the wheels Saturday. Totally shipping time was a little less than 2 weeks, the package arrived in perfect condition and no damage to the wheels inside.

The wheels are beautiful in person. I don't have a scale but they are unbelievably light. They are replacing the boat anchors on my BMC. I used yellow veloplugs and Conti GP4000s tires. I am saving over 600 grams compared to my aksium/lithion wheel set The plugs fit in very snug and the tires were a nightmare to get on. It took both of my hands and my girlfriend using a tire lever to pop the bead on.

I will update when I have 500 miles on them

i don't know why but tires mounted with the logos not lined up with the valve stem really bothers me...

but that aside.. i'm looking forward to the review! i rode fatallightning's orbea with soul 4.0s on it and they felt awesome - stiff and spun up crazy quick. so get out there and ride and give us our review!

I know this is venturing deep into WW territory, but are veloplugs lighter than rim tape? Whats their advantage?

Bikes: two wheeled ones

They're much lighter. Something like 4 grams versus 20 grams.

it slightly bothers me too but the bead was so tight on the rim that once it pops on it was impossible to even rotate. It was unreal

they are lighter, take up less space so the tire is easier to get on and make changing a spoke easier

If they were that tight with Veloplugs, I would hate to see how they would be if you had used regular rim tape.

Conti tires are known for their tight fits around rims... They are VERY tight. I have always had to exert a large amount of force to mount them and take them off. Other manufacturers aren't so bad, some I can undo without any levers

I broke a tire lever last night trying to mount the same tires on my new 4.0s. What a nightmare.

great looking wheels. I was looking at Souls but Sean told me it was a 4-6 week wait, so I grabbed a set of Rev-22s. Awesome wheels. I think I might replace the Velox with the plugs...I ripped 2 tubes on the rear wheel getting the Contis on.

Make sure you:
a) get the right size veloplugs, and
b) Sand or otherwise cover up any welded seams on the rim.

how is the clearance on the fork with the spokes heads in? how much do you weigh and how flexy are they? I think they use the Kinlin xr-200 rims.

clearance is fine, no issues on my Streetfire. I just took the bike out, I am 160lbs and there is very little to no flex (i hammered them pretty hard on a few sprints)

all good thus far!

Fixed! A tight-fitting bead can save your skin after a blowout.

Agreed.

Through user error I'm sure I had a front flat, explosive, almost certainly due to my not having seated one side of the tire correctly. 24mph, BOOM, guessing the bead let go, tube pushed out leaving a 4" gash in the tube. That side of the tire blew off but the other side stayed on the rim, I was able to safely slow and stop. Might have been another story with a "looser" tire that might have come off totally.

That was my first and so far only flat. There I said it, guess I'm flatting this week sometime.

Yep...I used leather work gloves and the palm of my hand to get a pair of 4000s'es on my Soul 3.0s...with rim tape (i don't think rim tape made it more difficult...the tube isn't inflated...much). I'd realign the labels on the tires...if it were me. Someone said putting them in a clothes driver or heating them up first makes it easier...I didn't do that...only talc'ed the tube. Enjoy em!

But the guy with the Zipps is in front of you. We can clearly see that Zipps are better, so why would we buy Soul?

Thanks. The cages are Specialized from a couple years ago...no longer in their line-up. Here's a link to a place that apparently still carries them (NOS probably).
