Ideale saddle has a slight reek coming from it

I received a vintage Ideale saddle recently. When I got it out of the box I immediately noticed a "less than aromatic" odor coming from it. Can I spray something like Febreeze on it or will that damage it? There is a tack shop about a block away so maybe I should go ask them.

Somebody crashed their bike and made a #2 in their shorts. Let me guess, you got a good deal?

To be honest I think it was rode hard and put up wet over and over because it has a bad case of BO!

When I was about 13, we used to joke about people who sniffed saddles... Try putting it in a ZipLoc bag for a week, with a bunch of mint and eucalyptus leaves. That might help.

If you think about it, used leader saddles are kind of gross in that capacity. It just hit me...Ew.

I'd treat it with Proofide. The smell of that stuff is quite pleasant (to me) and last a long time.

I forgot to mention it came to me from France! That might explain it!

Disclaimer for any French people: It's just a joke no harm meant by it.

It's no joke. I've been to France. Seriously, many people smell bad. A Metro car on a hot day is rank.

I'd echo Neal's suggestion. Treat it with Proofide or this Aussie stuff; my favorite. Beef tallow. . . . mmmmmm.

probably mildew (maybe even mold) and the cure for that is fresh air and sunshine...seriously. You don't want to bake it in the sun, and it may take more than a day, but it works. Hope it's summertime where you are, it isn't here in "sunny" (nope) NorCal!

I'm a used saddle-phob.........for this very reason....
That's why I didn't mind at all buying the new re-released Concor for my bike!
Buyng a used saddle to me is just a layer of lycra and maybe some chamois away from you-know-what...e...ver.....although not as bad a buying used bike shorts....
JMPO.......

Sounds like one BAD ASS saddle you have there

It takes a LONG time to rid leather of foul oders. Place it in a Zip-Loc bag with baking soda for at least a week then leave outside for at least another week.

Proofide is a beautiful thing.
Dust the buttcrumbs off it & ride the thing!
Fresh air & a brisk breeze upside it can only help...

Saute' in it a nice mirepoix with chanterelles and aromatic herbs and serve it as the second course. This calls for a heady Malbec.

seriously tho', I think I'd scrub it down real well with saddle soap a few times, maybe even a baking soda dry bath for a week ...and then Proofide it.
