Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommend a good headband or hat...?

For the past three or four winters, I've been wearing a wool neck gaiter as a hat, or as a big headband. It was too tight to be comfortable around my neck, so I tried to stretch it by wearing it around my head, and got to like it. Folded in half, the thing covers my ears, provides some warmth, wicks away the sweat, and all that, but the back is open, so I can vent and not overheat.

Yesterday I lost mine hiking on the mountain. And they've almost doubled in price. So I'd like to look at some other options.

What wool thing keeps your head and ears warm while you go up and down rolling hills on a cold winter day? Do you recommend it?

I use the Under Armour mesh skull cap under both my cycling and snowboard helmets. Low bulk, warm, and quick to dry.

Thanks folks! These are some great suggestions. I'll see if I can find any of them around town, and hope one works for me.

The real question is if it's still a century if I ride 100 miles, but wear one of these sometimes to stay warm?

My girlfriend bought me a wool hat from Rapha that is wonderful. It keeps me warm, fits perfect under a helmet and somehow never gets water logged. Probably expensive though.

I'm going to say no, since this displays a need to HTFU. If you're already cold, chances are you will also stop for coffee at some point, rendering it invalid. Sorry, no century for you.

Oh, and to your original question - I wear one of these under my helmet when it is cold:
