Bar Mitts and Bar End Mirrors

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I saw posted here a link to scooter bar mitts that were quite reasonably priced (~$16). The problem I had is that I have bar end mirrors and the mitts would interfere with that.

Problem solved:

For more details and pictures, you can visit my blog entry Bar Mitts and Bar End Mirrors.

Cheers,
Charles

Brilliant, sir, brilliant! In one of those happy coincidences that sometimes occur, I had - only a couple of hours ago - written off the idea of bar mitts for the very same reason. I see that I was insufficiently dogged in pursuit of warm fingers - thanks so much for posting!

I just poked a small hole in the end of my bar mitts. It actually made them easier to get into by holding them stationary. I liked my left one so much, that I got an old mirror that I didn't use anymore and put it in the right hand side, so I can get in and out of them without them moving around.

Although the location of the hold for the mount takes a careful cut compared to your velcro method.

What you did was actually what I was planning on doing. The reason I went further is because I wanted to be able to take the mitts off easily if it got warm if I made only a small hole that the mirror stem could come out of, I'd need to take off the mirror everytime I wanted to put on/remove the mitt.

The one thing that I'll point out is that where I was planning on putting the hole (in the corner) isn't actually where I would have wanted the hole (which is several inches from the corner).

I hadn't thought about it, but you're right. Because I've got mirrors sticking out, it means the mitts are much more likely to stay in place.

Cheers,
Charles

You could do this and have the barends stick out. That way, when your hands can't take it anymore, just put 'em inside. You could even buy a second set of mitts for the bar-ends themselves.

My bike with the bar mitts has studded tires on it, so it only gets used in the cold. My solution would not work for a bike I regularly wanted to remove the bar mitts. I take the mirror off whenever I need to re-cable the bike and that's it.

And yes, I had to put my hands in, figure out where the hole should be and put it there. It was several inches back from the corner.

It sounds to me like you did it right. I've only got one bike that I ride right now, so I wanted to be able to pop 'em on and off quickly.

You'd be amazed at what you can find for $25 on craigslist if you look long enough.. and I don't feel bad when it only lasts 2 or 3 years in the salt.

But it won't be a recumbent.. but for the winter that's not a problem for me.
