Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

13.18lbs (5.98kg): NOS 2009 Cervelo R3SL, Campagnolo Super Record EPS, & ENVE

I rode the R3SL at Excel Sports in 2009 and 2010. Out of the Cervelo line, it was my favorite. But it was pricey. I bought a semi custom Paketa magnesium frame from my buddy JP instead. Soon after, I found a closeout 2009 R3SL at R&A Cycles in Brooklyn. Pre-ban, so the frame could still be shipped. I watched the 56 sit for two years.

In February 2013, I called R&A on a snowy day in New York. The first guy I spoke to told me to start a bake sale. Here’s the back story to the build. A sub-6kg bike without the WW compromises.

First some pics.

That's nothing close to what I expected.

So nicely done.

Lifetime warranty was important. Before I called R&A, I spoke to Cervelo customer service. Only suggestion was to use the 43mm Enve 1.0. And don't drill any holes.

I read some reviews about R&A, which were generally crappy. I had a decent idea about who and what I might get. On a snowy New York day (it was nice in Boulder), I called. I offered them $2000 and the guy laughed at me. He told me to start a bake sale to raise the money. But, in his NY way, thought I was worthy enough to talk to Phil. He transferred me to Phil.

Phil was great. $2060 shipped. It arrived a few days later and promptly went into this ugly basement closet.

Pretty slick. 13lbs is fantastic. Are those clinchers or tubulars?

I always think RA is over price specially their old new stock frameset. Just a comparison I paid $2000 shipped for a 2012 VWD frameset with 3T LTD seatpost and BB from a dealer in VA.

Dealers stopped being able to sell online. Competitive Cyclist and Excel, who I think were two of the larger Cervelo dealers, took it in the shorts. I remember CC issued some statement about it. It got harder to find a mail order frame.

Once the policy changed, my understanding was Cervelo dealers were no longer supposed to take orders and ship bikes. Purchases had to be made at the local dealer. Dealers (like CC and Excel) were still able to unload the pre-ban bikes. My wife bought a 2009 S2 from CC.

Maybe.

The closeout price was $2700. Excel had just sold a batch of blem 2009 S2s for $1800, so I thought $2k was fair. It was also the last 56 I could find in the US. At that point, I guess it was worth what I was willing to pay.
