Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

got doored on the SS last week. wish I'd taken a photo...it was a large, crescent-shaped black/blue/yellow bruise in the middle of my shoulder.

Got some nice red VW paint on my riser bars-- don't mind the battle scars.

ahhh, I see. 'owie' as in 'ouchie' as in 'that farken hurt'.

Right.

My best crash was actually just scooting around town, on the way to meet up with some friends to tell them all about this great race I did on the weekend. I was 17 i think, just did my first MTB race back in 1988, which I DNF'd because there was this nice rock hidden just under the surface of this river crossing ( yeah, a river crossing. This was back when MTB races were half interesting ).
Anyway, I digress. I was riding along, and there was this part where you had to scoot onto the footpath, and turn this sharp corner, before you hit another section of road. Anyway, there was these small log kinda barriers on this corner. It was a corner I had turned a thousand times before. However, this time I must've been daydreaming and I clipped a pedal on one of these things on the downstroke and BAM! I was on my head.

Literally.

It felt like a minor crash, but I thought I better pop into the toilets near where my Mum worked so I could just wash my scraped up hands and check for other damage. When I looked in the mirror, I almost fainted. I had road rash on my forehead, on my nose, chin, my......****ing upper lip, shoulder, knees.

It was insane. I ended up bed ridden for two weeks, and got super depressed coz I was convinced I was going to be scarred for life.

Which I wasn't, of course. I have a little scar on my upper lip that's kinda cool, but you don't think that when you're 17. You think "That's it, I'll have to become a hermit, ride only in the cover or darkness, and date blind chicks."

No pictures of that crash, thankfully. i think.

Bikes: Can't stand the damn things...

I got hit by some b**** in BMW, yapping on her cell phone a while back. I put a serious dent in her car and when I went down I roadrashed on the pavement (I knew I should've shaved my arms too ). Well, guess what she does. She drives off.
I caught up to her at the next light, reached into her car, grabbed that f***ing cell phone out of her hand and smashed it into the pavement. I screamed "Don't you EVER do that again, you f***ing ****!" (that's the C word), and rode off into the sunset, scratched handlebar, bleeding arms, et al.

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

I didn't buy a printout of the CAT scan from my worst wreck. Was unemployed, had a fair amount of cash for Montana, had a bar that kicked me TONS of free drinks....

It was back before I got fixed. Was riding a MTB home from the bar (they told me that I had to be helped down the stairs to my bike before the band I was there to see even hit the stage - lesson is don't mix expired pharms w/ liquor) and unlocked my bike (amazing) then rode it. They had one bike path in the town, which ran along the railroad tracks. Pretty much no lights on it. At several intersections, they had basically an upside down 'L' made out of 4x4 lumber on one side of the track to make you stop. I'm pretty sure I flipped over one and landed on my jaw.

I don't really know, though. I was probably passed out for awhile, then got up and rode the rest of the way home. Climbed into bed, passed out, woke up the next morning wondering why my ears wouldn't pop. Turns out my jaw went through both of my ear canals and ruptured one of my ear drums. Finally figured that out in the morning when I realized that I shouldn't have a big chunk missing from the skin on my chin (3 stitches) and that what I thought was waxy build up was actually blood dripping from my ears.

The doctors thought I'd actually cracked the bottom of my skull when I first went in - they said it looked like the same thing that sometimes kills prize fighters when they get hit really hard and die.

It really sucks to wake up REALLY hung over an realize you have to go to the ER.

Okay is that 1000 words? That's worth a picture, right?

Oh, and still paying it off. The American medical system is way too hard on people w/out insurance.

I know it has been posted before, but the superchivo "I just busted my collarbone fixie style" pic is one of my faves.

I once had a friend go down who wore a heavy chain around her waist for locking her bike. She had link-shaped bruises around her waist for a while afterwards.

Bikes: Titus road, Fort CX

I went over a Porshce hood. I left fingernail scratches in the hood. I had 2 link-shaped bruises. I broke off a wiper. I had a red mark on my shin that resembled the fork crown on the steamroller. I cracked the windshield. They bent my fork.
I still exist

Nothing says "broken collarbone" better than the picture posted by Schiek (thanks and sorry Superchivo)
