At the risk of becoming the target of veteran flaming again, can anyone tell me what the advantage is to having a low BB? I've noticed a lot of AM bikes advertising that in their descriptions lately, but when I think of a lower BB, I think of lower ground clearance. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Lowers the center of mass for better high-speed cornering. As with downhill bikes, which are also trending toward lower BB heights, there is a trade-off, of course. Lowering the BB makes it more susceptible to pedal-strikes; so there is always a fine line compromise between cornering efficiency and enough clearance for 'most' situations. That's another reason low-profile has become the new holy grail of platform pedals - - anything to gain back clearance lost by lowering the BB . . . that and the use of shorter crank arms.


I checked back old posts and my Blindside, when it was freshly built, had a 14.2" BB height - - considered a bit low at the time and I did have occasional pedal-strike issues, even with 165mm cranks.

I didn't even know there were brake rotors that small for bike! What is that thing used for? Obviously not stoping!

If you look carefully at the front you will notice that there is rotors.

I saw the rotors. Thats why I said that I had never seen rotors that small before. But what is that bike used for? Those things can't have that much stopping power with that small of rotors (granted, the rear rotor looks to be about your average 160mm).

I bet the front is 160 too, it's just very hard to see. Their website has all the build kits with 160s.

I think you are right. When I get really close to the pic I can see the whole thing. Before I could only see the little part that was noticeable because the fork was in the background. I was thinking it was some type of new 2" rotor or something . I was all like " how is that ever going to stop you" But now that you mention it, I thing you are right and it is just really really hard to see the rest of it cause of the background. Thanks for clarification on that.

Ahhh . . . it's those new Ghost Rotors. Wafer-thin metallized ultra-high-temp polycarbonate blend that is nearly transparent and gives brakes more power as the heat up, instead of fading.
