My cheaper than Rohloff drivetrain has a significantly wider range. My 46/34/20 with an 11-34 cassette gives me a 15 to 105 gear inch range.
And it's more adaptable. If I want I can extend that range to a 48 tooth outer and a 36 tooth cassette giving me a 14 to 110 gear inch range for the cost of a new chainring and a cassette.
There's also the cost to consider. I have no problem spending money on bike parts but I kind of draw the line at $900 to $1200 for a hub

11/32 is common and inexpensive. Most long cage derailleurs will work fine with it.
If you get one with more teeth than you currently have on the bike, be prepared to get a new chain in case the existing chain is not long enough to fit on your biggest sprocket and biggest chainring without binding.

I use 40 and 26 up front with 12-36 in back. Gives me all the range I need. My 90" top gear is enough for an old man.

I had been there only a few hours when I knew that I made the right decision to leave my Rohloff bike at home. I do not think I ever used my 24T granny gear on that trip, since the only "hills" were bridges, I usually climbed up the bridges with 42 front/26 rear.

I have a 12-36 10 speed out back with a 22/32/44 triple up front. I think I should have went with a 12-32 for tighter spacing but oh well. It does fine on my commuter and will be fine when I do some touring this summer. I am also using a Shadow Clutch Deore Der which has been awesome, I also added a Wolftooth Goatlink to the Der and this I think has helped keep shifting smoother.
I much prefer a 12t start position to try and getting tighter gearing, even my road bikes start at the 12t.
I came from a Nuvinci N360 and am glad to be on a triple, I just enjoy the range, more so on the top end and less drag. IGH is a great option but sourcing parts at local shops is always going to be a pain, its just not cost effective for them to keep it on hand when its used so rarely.

I have a 1 X 11 with 11-42 cassette and a 40 tooth ring on a Kona Rove. I don't think 1 X 11 is a good idea for loaded touring. The chain angle is a bit much if you were grinding up a long hill fully loaded you can almost feel the bits of aluminum hitting the tarmac. I would not hesitate to take it on a light tour. I also tour with a Fargo and it is a 2 X 10 (11-36), with 38/24 rings. On occasion I wish I had a taller gear, like a 40t ring. Still, with the new wide/narrow tooth patterns, I think all the ratios you would want can be gotten with a 2 X 10.

I'm using 3 sets of crankset and cassette for my touring bike.
42T 1x, 46/36, and 50/34 cranksets and 11-28T, 11-32, and 11-40. Depending on terrain and what I'm carrying, I swap them out before I pack.

I'm running 11-36, XTR long, with Ultegra derailleur and crank 30-42-52 up front. Indexed bar end shifting, and I get all 30 combinations. Recently changed over to Gevanelle shifters/brake handles.

Sram WIFLI chain capacity is 37T. If you have 50/34 x 11-40 will need (50-34)+(40-11)= 45T capacity.
This is even considering using RoadLink to begin with.
