Depends. I used to race MTB with a fair bit of success. It's essentially a dirty TT. If you want to improve your bike handling skills an MTB will do that. And you'll build a lot of the same engine you'll build on a TT bike. And pick up a lot of cool scars in the process. It's a nice change of pace too.

But you won't learn the technical aspects of time trialing or put yourself in the best position to do well in stage races or ITT's (or TTT's for that matter). It takes time to dial in a TT position, adapt and train on a TT rig, then stumble through the good bad and ugly efforts before you hone the blade.

If you're heading into the 3's I think there would be benefit to having a TT bike vs. an MTB for now, assuming you weren't planning on racing MTB. If you were planning on racing MTB, then you're going to take a beat down on your road or track bike
