On yesterday's ride, about 5 miles from the end, on the one MUP I will ride on (because there's so little foot traffic), I was passed by a guy in PenVelo kit (local racer club). He was going just a little faster than my usual pace, so I used him as a rabbit for the next 3-4 miles. I stayed well back most of the way, mostly because he gained on me in a couple spots, like when there were 2 people on one side of the trail and a woman jogging with a stroller on the other right by the gate at the end of the MUP - I was a gentleman and let her go through the gate first, without crowding her, but he'd just weaved through them.
Anyway, about the time we got to San Mateo proper, I finally caught up to him. Then there were two more cyclists, and we spent the next mile or so all leapfrogging each other over two climbs and with a descent in the middle. After that, there's a spot where I usually go as hard as I can, because I make a left turn at a light and have to get across two lanes to get to the left turn lane in about 100 yards. That's where I dropped them. It was fun!

Back when I first started with Pen Velo, I did the New Year's Day San Bruno Mt. Hillclimb. I had my version 1 Cannondale with a 42X24. I remember it as one of the hardest, coldest bike rides I've done.

The Bianchi is the only black bike I own, and as you can see it's not even all black. It's got those "Mid-Oughts highlights".
You did Mt San Bruno? Cool! I actually work at the corner of Guadalupe Canyon and Bayshore, but in the 5 years I've been here I haven't ridden up it. Somebody told me the shoulder is too full of debris - is that anything like true? Now that I have no group to look after, I'm thinking about doing mid-day, midweek rides from the office, and since the mountain looms over me, it's an obvious choice. And we're only here till April, so I better do it soon, if I'm gonna do it at all!

Old men sitting on benches and smoking pipes downtown? If they're old enough they might have attended that school.

Yep. PenVelo seems to be based more in the San Mateo area, while Alto Velo is more Palo Alto. Of course, their ranges overlap.

Our perfect weekend weather has given way to Monday rain. I'm okay with that. It's better than the other way around.

AND the fog had expanded so it covered the first FOUR miles, not just the first mile. AND as I had ascended, I'd noticed most of the turns had sand/gravel on the inside of the turn. So I had to keep my speed down, braking with frozen hands. Not the coldest ride I've ever done, but the one on which I got the coldest!!!!

Got it. My friend lives in Menlo Park. We hope to visit some day so he can take me up OLH. And maybe even Mt Hamilton.

If you go up OLH, you should then go down West OLH. The first maybe 1/4 mile is through redwoods, but then it suddenly opens out into oak/chapparal, with a view all the way to the ocean, very little traffic, and a reasonably good surface. At the bottom, you can get onto 84, either back to Woodside, or out to the Pacific at San Gregorio. Then you can take Stage Road or Rt. 1 North to Tunitas Creek, which is another fun local climb. At the top of the ridge, you can cross 35 and go down Kings Mountain (technical and twisty) or go a couple miles South to 84 at Skylonda, turn left and have a much less technical descent back to Woodside. 38 miles, 4100 feet.

The roads will still be there. And depending when you come, they might be dry!
