Tire width different front - rear question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bigger tire up front. Rear wheel is stationary in the frame. Front tire absorbs shock, better for steering, front wheel is your control wheel. For off season riding in crappy weather I ride a 25 in back and 32 up front. Excellent ride characteristics.

Not that I had the cred to argue with Sheldon Brown, but I cannot remember the last time that I had a flat on the front (road bike). It was certainly more than 3 flats back (cannot remember further than that).

When I’m racing Ironman I’ve got 25R 23F. 3 reasons:

1. My rear tire wears faster. 25R theoretically wears out slower because of the larger contact patch and less pressure on each touch point with tarmac.

2. Aero trumps all in tri. 23F gives a very slight advantage in hiding frontal area from the wind.

3. Suppleness. While the majority of weight now is evenly distributed between my forearms and butt, my booty benefits from less weight than a road bike and the extra suppleness from the 25R, crucial when you’re in the same position for multiple hours.
