Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

South Carolina quit using chip seal about 10 years ago. Any road in SC with chip seal was done over 10 years ago. Only virgin asphalt today.

Chip seal provokes all sort of reactions from cyclists, most of them negative. Let's keep this to cycling. Otherwise this conversation will continue in the cesspo...... errr... P&R.

It's part of the process...they'll come back and sweep up the stones that don't stick.

Well I'm still here and they're still using the crap. I haven't been able to use some roads for over a month now since they put the crap down. Almost all the roads I ride are chipseal and man is it a luxury to get a 1/4 patch of real asphalt.

When I lived in Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor), they would ruin many roads that way. Talk with a contractor and they will tell you that it is a waste of money.

Y'know, it's been said that the health of the Roman Empire could be extrapolated from the state of her roads. 50+ years ago we were a nation that could build amazing roads...

Over a month since they laid it and no one has swept up anything. No wonder all my cars have chips in the windshields.

I'm pretty sure the roads in my area that are chip/seal now were dirt roads 50 years ago.

They local guys here actually do a decent job.

Chip seal roads smooth out fairly quickly, though never smoooooth. It's the shoulders I complain about. The loose gravel stays forever as there is no traffic there.

Chip and seal is better than gravel, but way worse than normal old pavement.

Maybe so. Here where I live, over the past year I've watched crews come through and chip over some of the nicest, smoothest pavement ever. On a lark one time as I drove by a crew destroying the nicest section of my drive to San Antonio I decided to call the state to report the "construction" site as large scale vandalism and destruction of public property.

Then I tried to have a civil conversation with a county representative about the widespread chip-seal. I was told in no uncertain terms just what regard he held my opinion in.

Thank God I'm moving...but it probably won't be any better anywhere else.

I haven't seen the chip on any nearby roads.

I hope I never do.

They are using Chip and Seal on most of the roads here in NW Missouri. I lose about 2 mph once I hit them from a normal asphalt road, not to mention the extra vibration.

Yeah, they're doing that here too. I hate it for the first little while, a lot of loose rocks. But one of the roads they did a year ago is just fine now. Don't recall how long it actually took to smooth out though, one day you just stop noticing that rocks are flinging everywhere. I don't know if they swept it but I kind of doubt it.

It's been over a decade. Was the prediction of the future accurate?

Hint: Gravel Bikes are a thing now

A lot of our roads get an initial chip seal and some sort of top coat a month or two later. The chip seal doesn’t bother me, I ride fat tires

Haha! Awesome thread revival. So I guess the Chip and Seal roads really were funded by Big Gravel to get the masses to buy more bikes.

We get mostly Chip and Seal around here. It's rough as guts in the country. They don't sweep either, just let the vehicle tyres sweep the loose stuff off to the side, usually into the bike lane (if there even is one). The surface is just so slow and dead compared to a smooth hot mix.

I think some funding also comes from "Safelite" and similar companies that repair cracks in windshields.

We have that crap here in Wa state. They hit all the best rural cycling roads with it. But then people get all huffy about paying more taxes, so they get what they pay for - a super cheap alternative to new pavement.

Cant remember the last time I used my high pressure tubular wheel set... Ha

I don't think the roads are going to get any better really. We have to adapt and overcome.
