I wave, I like waving. I notice the frequency I get waved at initially is dependent upon my bike and attire. When I’m on my ugly old hybrid or touring bike with some Zoic or Club Ride casual cycling clothes and Shimano SPD sandals I hardly get waved at. If I’m on my Seven wearing Rapha and all color coordinated I get waved at constantly. I only don’t wave if circumstances dictate I need to keep my hands on the bar and my mind focused on safe navigation.
I usually do the head nod, see a lot of cyclists doing the same.

yeah, I should have mentioned that in my original post that I also nod in lieu of waving sometimes.

So on today's ride - brutal headwinds (at one point, I was doing 200W to hold 21kph / 13mph). It was mostly an easy ride so i am tooling along in low Z2 at speeds that were embarrassing, given the headwinds. Look ahead, and there is a roadie who is going even slower (I think he was wearing tennis shoes).
Feeling the judgemental gaze of all of Bikeforums on me emanating from the 5G towers, I was debating on what to do. Given that this would have been an awkwardly long pass - enough for us to actually exchange sentences - I was trying to figure out a way to manage this in a manner that would unite everyone here in the 41 at my poised and adroit handling of the situation.
Suddenly, the effer looked back and saw me. We made eye contact. Reflexively, i lifted a hand up and waved - and also added a "hey". As i passed him, he looked expectantly at me, as if he was going to say something or was waiting for me to say something. Too much, too soon, hombre. I didnt make any further eye contact, repressed a sudden urge to hit him with my frame pump (mainly because I dont have a frame pump) and kept going.
I feel as though i have fallen from my perch atop Olympus.

In addition to other cyclists, I always wave to police and fire fighters. Almost without exception they wave back. I hope it makes them feel as good as it makes me feel.

Today I passed by a pair of very fit looking young ladies who were doing landscape work near the road. I didn't wave but I smiled, nodded and rang my bell.

I wave at the salmon ninjas in my neighborhood. They yell "You're on the wrong side of the road!" while they ride without lights facing traffic. I hope they wave at oncoming cars.

any time I'm in public, I wave at anyone doing the same thing I'm doing. This gets really difficult in grocery stores and on the freeway, but, somehow I get by.

Slight head nod or possibly an eyebrow raise for me. Actual wave seems like a lot of work as I grind along.

First, spring isn't until September.
Second, we tend to nod, smile and/or raise the fingers of our right hands. Outright waving is saved for people we know. Much like how it is in Canada.

Oooh. I like that. Acknowledge someone without deeming them worthy of recognizing being acknowledged! That's next level shiz.

And then there are people who go all-out "Morning, how are ya?" from the opposite side of the road as we pass each other at a combined velocity of 30mph

But I wave at everyone, clip-on bars or not. Cyclists need to stick together.

No, as a matter of fact, bicycles are on the correct side of the road here.

In the fractious, contentious, polarized society we live in, waving and saying hi are friendly gestures that I very much like, I wave and say hi all the time. It can't hurt to be friendly, and it feels good both on the giving and receiving end.

I've always been a big waver, I wave to all bikers, doesn't matter if you are pulling a trailer of kids or if you are looking like a hardcore roadie I wave. However, recently I've seen two different bikers riding cities bikes with flat bars, and AERO clip on bars attached, to me that's a step to far. I can't wave at such a person.
