Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When I lived in the mountains my ex planted trees including a pear tree. The cold didn't bother it and it started producing small pears I think in it's second year.
You had plums in our local area? I actually hadn't considered that. Maybe I should ask at the nursery about fruit trees in general.

Not intentionally. I have no need to leave my office area until it's time to ride home and I am not the type to pull a Julie Briskman.

I think self-quarantine in this case is wise.

I've lived through presidential visits since GHWB and never got "exposed." I have schmoozed with a few cabinet secretaries and other face cards, though.

There is a communal plate of cookies in our NJ office. Is that not a good thing virus-wise?

I am going to be here again on Thursday and will fill up the tank so I don't have to touch a gas pump handle.

My take is eat 'em now. Next week, communal food may be a lot less tempting. Do you think everyone in Phila will be crossing the river for full serve gas now?

I did some damage to the supply.

Gas is about $0.45/gallon cheaper in NJ, so possibly. But you do have to pay the $5 to get back to PA.

The water at my townhouse was shut off around 10AM yesterday due to a broken main.

As of noon today it is still not fixed.

Lack of water is so much more inconvenient than lack of electricity, I've found.

Any chain waxers here? I'm wax curious. I was peeked in to a thread in the Greater 41 and someone mentioned that they use the mini-crockpots for their waxing. I recalled that I have two of those mini crockpots and that I've never come up with a use for them otherwise.

Yeah, no water is no fun at all. We've had to go without for short periods and it sucks. If you have a little heads-up, at least you can fill up some stock pots for flushing duty doody. Har har har.

If you covet a really CLEAN drivetrain, it's worthy of your consideration. The time commitment and hassle are significant, but you could certainly give it a shot. There are as many home-brew options for wax as there are for chain lube BTW.

Personally, I am too lazy a mechanic, and don't mind a slightly dirty but functional drivetrain, so not for me.

Since this was a surprise for everyone we didn't have any notice, but the gubbermint was nice enough to give everyone affected a case of bottled water.

But yes, it is nice that plumbing is a fairly simple system and if you have the time to prepare its not a big deal. Unfortunately at the moment we have half of a washing machine filled with clothes and soap that have been marinating for a day or so.

QFT.

I'm enjoying how clean my drivetrain is currently with the fresh cassette and chain with factory lube on it, but I know it wont last forever.

FYI, the D-A/Sram setup is quiet as Velo Vol during a Sunday sermon

I, too, am a lazy mechanic, but my drivetrain gets filthy and then I have to dig myself out of that hole, cleaning chains, scraping pulley wheels and flossing cassettes. I figure that it's a trade-off of faffs - the faff of waxing vs the faff of cleaning. From what I understand, once you have a process down, the faff of waxing isn't so bad and you get a quiet, clean drivetrain. Color me interested.

FWIW, this is kinda like what lead me to tubeless - I didn't like the hassle of changing flats on the side of the road so I traded it for the hassle of mounting tires and checking sealant levels periodically. For me, it's been a great trade-off of faffs.

I am a chain waxer. Well, actually Mr H is.

He uses a full sized crockpot. I believe there is a good reason behind this but I don't know what it is. I can ask details if you are interested.

There is an ultrasonic cleaner, some chemicals including mineral spirits which are not sold in CA so we need to pick up on out-of-state vacations, and the crockpot.

Then > > > > stuff happens > > > > ta da! my chain is waxed

I am fuzzy on the details though
