Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Blew another rear tire/tube. Had about 300 miles on the tire (cheap Kenda). Is that about normal? Seems like the tread gets close to worn, then it'll develop a blister, which then the tire/tube blows about a second after you notice the bump-bump coming from the rear tire as you're riding. Has happened twice this year which is a PITA since I obviously don't carry a spare tire.

Were there many folks in your races? Were they close races? Anything weird happen? Did you do well for your personal standards? Was it fun? Any of these that you are interested in answering.

It was an individual time trial where lowest time wins. I was the only entrant in my age group, so all I had to do was ride to win. Had I been in the next lower age group, I would have been faster than two of the competitors, slower than two of them, and finished third. I have not riden a 500m TT in six years or competed in anything in three years, so I did this simply to support the promoter who offered older age brackets. I used a very low gear (47x15) and had a correspondingly slow time, because I didn't want to blow out my aging knees at the start. And, yes, most importantly it was a lot of fun.

HB!

Since I'm always late for Today I...

Yesterday I did 30 miles round trip to a new brewery that turns out hasn't started selling their own beer yet.

Around mile 25 I took a big ass bee to the face at speed and got stung in the lip.

I purchased some Simplex Retrofriction shifters. I have held off on buying these from eBay because people seem to fetishize these shifters, so you can't get them without paying a ridiculous price. Luckily I know collectors of vintage bike parts and was able to get mine on the cheap

Today I...

...am kinda angry. I ordered a new bike this last weekend, and it shipped on Tuesday with a delivery date of Friday. Which was AWESOME, because that gave me the weekend to put it together, tweak it, and ride it a bit.

Last night, I got a notification from UPS that it's delayed due to "operating conditions". I looked that up, it means that it didn't get onto a truck for some reason, and it's usually only a one business-day delay. But that means Monday. Which means no new bike this weekend.

Grr. Argh.

Gonna go check out an EC90 TKO tubular wheelset off the CL soon, unusually great price... maybe will have an actual race wheelset for the track bike soon! I'm not scared of having to clean em up a bit and glue on my own tires.
