I'm operating under the assumption that I will just have to find something else at some point. My bulk buy just delayed the process. That said, I expect to be going through 4 or more of them during Saturday's gravel race.

A long race: that's an ideal use case for such a scarce resource. Clif Shots have kept me going many times on long races.

Is/was Clif shots a thin or thicker liquid?

GU gels are thicker and somewhat pasty. Lots of flavors, though.
Honey Stingers and VFuel brand are thinner/not pasty. The VFuel peach cobbler flavor I tried tasted decent.
The Hammer gel I tried did not agree with my stomach.
The MCM will have this brand on the course this weekend. I'll get some, try at a later date and report back.

74 miles/8000' of mostly dirt - I'm expecting 6 hours-ish. In addition to the Clif gels, I'll have fuel in my bottles, and a couple of heavier snacks with me, too. Being under-fueled will not be on my list of excuses for my mediocre performance.

I think the company that makes the Cliff bars has done much more than many others to provide a quality product.

My racing days are decades behind me, but if I were to carry anything like gels with me, I'd be tempted to use a small refillable flask and chocolate sauce. The point is simply to take in palatable, easy-to-digest carbohydrates, in liquid or gel form, right? Pennies per serving, as the saying goes, and you can dilute to taste. There's also butterscotch sauce and maybe others.

I'm sure there'd be a disadvantage, but what?

It may matter more to some than others, but some of the gels, Hammer for example, have no simple sugars. They have only high glycemic index carbohydrates, such as maltodextrin.
one party who likely sees that as an important distinction is your dentist.

oh yeah, and another thing - some of us like the gels that have caffeine.

If your goal is low cost, you can buy maltodextrin in bulk and make your own gel.

Ideally if you can find it, you want some Zion porridge, but maybe in one of those Hammer flasks. It's a single-celled protein combined with synthetic aminos, vitamins and minerals. Everything the body needs.

That's my flavor preference, too. I'm down to the last couple in my current box, with 3 boxes still in reserve. I've been trying to lean on Skratch chews a little bit more often to ration the Clif Shot supply.
