It is very cool seeing stuff I put in the box being selected. It similar to seeing the shy, awkward 3rd grader I coached in flag football become a star athlete in high school. In the further reaches of my imagination, I contributed the greatness of another.

Well, all did not go as planned because our local office decided to shorten hours from 8:30-5:30 down to 10:00-4:00.

Here's the status update with obligatory cat photo:

What was removed:

OMG, that horrible, cheap, heavy crank. Honest, when I tossed that thing in last time I had the box, I thought the next BOC recipient would remove it immediately - to the nearest trash can.

If you really want it, Dave, I think I still might have the NDS arm for that. Complete with a plastic pedal still permanently rusted in place.

To be honest, that was my initial thought for the crank, but then I thought it wouldn't be line with the spirit of the BoC. It's going to become part of an art project... or used to defend myself in a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-style world. I didn't have time to post photos because I've been wrenching all evening, but I will. Thanks for the offer of the matching arm, I've got a handful of my own if the need arises.

The 6s uniglide cassette pieces I pulled (16-19-22-26-30) were exactly what I needed to complete my RB1 half-step project. I swapped them onto the 7s hub (with appropriate spacers), threw on the 2nd position 14t and finished it up with the 12t locking. I matched it with a 44/40 pair of chainrings and it now has 14 distinct, usable gears! Yeah, they're not all DA cogs to match the hub, but 30t DA uniglide cogs don't exist anyway.

I'd been struggling for weeks trying to figure out how to get more gears out of a 7s hub when St. Sheldon shined his light on good ol' half-step gearing. This is a gravel grinder, so I'm not too worried about the top end being a bit low. I never need that much except in a descent anyway. Can't wait to take her out for a test drive!

Oh and the bell was desperately needed on my daily commuter.

I know it might not work out like this for everybody, but for me this has been like being a kid at Christmas all over again! Thanks for putting this together guys and definitely keep me on the list!!

A new day is dawning on the triple crank, @Lascauxcaveman.

Spray down with a little WD40, let sit, then clean with a wire wheel on a bench grinder. Good times.

Box has touched down!

My take:

I first saw the fork legs in there and thought they would make a cool shop decoration. I pulled one out and noticed the dropout appeared to have a chunk out of it so I pull the other one out. Same thing. And then I look closer and the ole light bulb pops on. Bottle opener! Super cool and I had to snatch one.

I don't have it in me to upgrade the box to new and lose and history. I'll leave that to someone else. Box should ship out tomorrow if all goes as planned.

Thanks for the pics!

Oh, and box graffiti or not, I think that one is past its sell-by date. Unless you plan on taping the hell out of it, it may be time for a new box. Wouldn't want it to get to the next person with a big hole in it - and completely empty

The box is a lot more sound than it appears in the photos. Past recipients have taken the time to encompass the entire box with tape. I'll feel 'er out.

Not to mention the bracing added inside the box...

You ask, DD or RS adds you. When you ask and when they see your request determines where your name falls in the next round. I've been through the cycle a few times. I think it is kind of useful to follow different people. Obviously, if someone puts some real nice crap in the box, it won't stay there for long. Different people have different stuff to contribute (like those fork blade bottle openers) and are interested in different stuff (I couldn't care less about MTB bits, for example).
