Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not everyone at 68 is retired. (In the US, pretty soon no one will be.)

I just realized I only started logging rides in late May.

Trainer miles suck. They should count double.

Well, there is that! You really have to admire folks who get significant mileage while still working. Still, don't underestimate the toll age takes on your body and motivation. You youngsters will find out if you live long enough

Down from last year a good bit at 8,100 miles and 381,500 ft climb. The wife went back to work and I lost some ride time to kid duty. (which is also time well spent)

ha, that made me laugh. Now that I really started structured training, the junk miles have gone way down, actual time on the bike has gone down slightly, trainer miles have gone up quite a bit, and my FTP is thankfully on the rise.

On target for:

10,000km of riding (9,920 as of now)
46,600m of climbing
15d 1h 38m in the saddle as of now.

170km was longest ride. Wanted to hit 12,000km as a point of pride, but lost a month+ due to being sick over the year. Still far better than last year (8,000km)

I hate that for young folks. The anticipation of retirement kept me going through many years of drudgery. I have an opinion as to why people now are less likely to have that option, but no need to send this to P&R!

Over 1800 since April, I've been recording based on my school year. There was a solid month and half period in there with almost no riding, and I figure I put at least 200 miles on in January, February, and March, so around 2400-2500 miles as a rough estimate.

2502 miles. Not bad considering work interfered from January to April and again the last two months.

I have a friend the passed 10,000 and 4500 of that was teaching spin class. So yes, you can have trainer miles and work at the same time. Do they count?

When I was doing structured training and racing weekly I still only did about 300km a week (15,000km a year).
I always laugh when I read the "Bikes from the Bunch" section of Australia's Ride Magazine and see people who are about a foot shorter than me and weigh about 10kg more than me saying that they are riding 350-400km a week.
I always wonder if it is downhill in every direction that they ride.

It also happens to be what entire rest of the world uses (6 billion+ people and counting). And is also an ISO standard, in addition to being SI.

You could also use milli-furlongs per fortnight if you wanted.

Absolutely! I assume you also use degrees Centigrade. How's that work for you, casual conversation in Lincoln NE?

Yup. I can do both. All my devices are setup to readout metric as preference. Makes comparisons about climbing relative to distances easier.

Since most locals only speak furlongs and fortnights and firkin, I can deal in those too.

Just poking at you I like metric measurements and hate it when I have to figure what someone means by a 22 inch bike....

We Americans don't care. That's not how we roll. So keep counting.

All in fun of course. But I know someone will get bent out of shape over nothing.
