Gonna try to bookend some miles around the club ride tomorrow, aiming for 5ish hours. I may pull the plug and shortcut home 30 or 45min earlier than that if I hammer too deep on the ride, which is always a possibility. Riding over Sunday and Monday looks like it might be in the garage.

It depends where you're talking about on the west coast. The climate and weather patterns in So Cal are very different than Nor Cal, OR, and WA. So Cal is a desert, and any rain in August is extremely rare. In the case of tropical storms this time of year, cool ocean temps in the eastern Pacific usually kill them before they reach land, which is why the current storm is such a big deal. Although it's expected to be significantly reduced from hurricane status, landfall of a tropical storm like this in So Cal is a unicorn. In my area, predictions are for multiple inches of rain over a 48 hour period. The mountain range that I'm adjacent to might get as much as a foot of rain in that time period as the storm is wrung out against the hills.

The question isn't "Are they better?" It's "Are they DIFFERENT?"
If they're no different, then they're no better or worse. If they are different, then better or worse is a matter of preference.
Back when Dad was in the applesauce business, Knouse Foods made one kind of applesauce, which they made from a blend of apples. Later, varietals started appearing, like Gravenstein out here on the West Coast. What's better, a blend of apples which bring different characteristics to a more harmonious whole? Or a varietal that has the characteristics of only one? You pays yer money and you takes yer choice.

Been awhile... I'm not dead yet for everyone wondering.
I'm just resolving some health issues, and the first thing I'm doing now that I can is getting back on the bike.
FTP is like 50% what it was at my peak. I have a lot of work to do...

So I got back on zwift, 'cos it's like 316.48 degrees right now. It seems since the last time I used it seriously all the workout programs assume you have ERG.
Even worse my old cyclops mag trainer has a nasty squeak. Are those serviceable at all?
I think my bike's still ok after some minor maintenance. I'd usually take it to where I bought it for a free lifetime adjustment, but they got bought by Trek so... I'll have to figure it out myself now. If you had a bike with 4k mi on it that's been sitting a few years, what would be the first things you'd lube/refresh?

I would think there is a way to service the mag trainer but I never tried to work on one.

It's been vertical in the garage. I've ridden it a little over those years. I've lubed chain, and will use the checker tonight. Anyone ever drop a chain in a ultrasonic? I'm willing to bet it's fine on the checker and just needs a good deeeeep clean.

I've never cleaned a chain other than just wiping them off.

utterly abysmal ride today, heart stuck between 80 and 105bpm, average 91. achey and short of breath. my 5 year old has covid (probably for her first time, although CDC suggests almost all toddlers have had it without symptoms) and i’m sort of wondering if i do too…
