it makes me wonder why everyone that buys bikes from places like walmart buy strictly mountain bikes and rides them on the sidewalk

then again they probably picked it up in their maibatsu monstrosity

That does sound like fun. I can use my motorcycle for that, as long as the cops don't see.

Today I picked the wrong day to go for a run. Then I hit up Goodwill and got three good books and two pairs of sunglasses for a whopping $14.

What happened to the original fork? I've never seen a Trek of that vintage with a chrome fork and that looks like an inexpensive replacement. I'm assuming you checked the down tube and top tube for wrinkles.

It's a Tange TR replacement fork, yes. I haven't been able to find out anything about TR's quality. I'm still thinking about an upgrade, though. Would a wound up look weird?

Luckily, the only issue with the frame is how dirty it is from a ride early today

Yes. Don't do it.
Curved forks are the way to go with 80's bikes.

So hard to find, though

Any recommendations? I know I could go custom, but I don't feel like spending more than half of what I paid for the bike on a new fork.

$290 is a lot to work with.

I believe many trek road models from that time period (late 80's) shared the same fork with 42mm rake (I looked up the catalog). If you're able to get a fork from around the same period (same color might be a stretch; just make sure there's enough thread for the stack height & locknut), you should be able to restore the ride and handling to how it was intended to be from trek. If a fork is of mystery origin to the model it came from, try to cross reference model colors in trek catalogs.

For the record, that's a cheaper tange fork, I have the exact same fork from a peugeot I parted. It was a downgrade from stock in both cases.

I would imagine it would feel weird to sit off-center on the bike.

Edit: I just noticed the fork is offset too. That can't promote good handling. Probably a good thing it has no front brake, the steering axis being to one side of the contact patch would make the bike pull to one side when you hit the front brake.

And what is that thing in front of the rider's crotch? How is it actuated? They probably called it the "Hump Horn"

it's probably very similar to the original; Tange made the forks for that model Trek. If your fork has "TR" fork ends, it's a decent fork.
