Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have noticed that occasionally Outlook thinks it's syncing when it isn't. And if I quit and try to launch, it won't launch. I have to go to Task Manager and find the Outlook process and kill it. THEN it will all work properly. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you're depending on getting emails so you can respond promptly, it can be a big issue.

The whole cloud-based MS Office thing sucks ass, especially with the amount of security the USG loads it with. The only thing more infuriating is iCloud Keychain.

I have that problem all day, every day. Very frustrating. I've spent hours looking for a cure, with no luck.

Last night while Zwifting, I saw a message from some rider to all riders in the area, that the KOM on the Volcano was currently held by someone using Zpower, Zwift's estimate of your power output based on a speed sensor and a known dumb trainer. This is after watching a video of a Zwift race where it was mentioned that Zpower users sometimes seem to have an advantage because it may overestimate their power, and thus nobody takes them seriously in a race. So I started feeling weird about the fact that I'm using Zpower, even though there's no chance I'd score a KOM or win a race, and I found myself wanting a smart trainer, which I've been trying not to want because they cost between $500 and $1500.

In another vein, what with the New Case, and the Hospitalization graphs going vertical, I've been cogitating on what this means for outdoor cycling before Spring Vaccine Season. I'm wondering whether, even if the Gov't doesn't severely restrict outdoor activities, I should restrict them anyhow.

So now I'm thinking maybe I should get a smart trainer, so that my indoor riding is more satisfying while we wait for the frightening 3rd wave of this thing to pass. But I also realize I may just be making an excuse to buy something I want but don't need.

Then I get into thinking WHICH smart trainer. And I found myself thinking "In for a penny, in for a pound", and looking at the direct drive models, thinking "$999 isn't THAT much more than $500, is it?"

That way, madness lies.

The other option is to keep your dumb trainer and get a power meter, which obviously works outside, too.

I've been resisting power meters because of having 4 bikes that I use interchangeably. I'd have to decide on ONE bike to add the power meter to. The easiest would be the Canyon, because I could just get a left hand R7000 105 crank power meter. BUT my trainer won't take thru-axles, so I'd have to get anew trainer anyway. Or if I got Garmin Vector pedals, I'd have one bike that uses different cleats, so I'd need to buy new shoes just for it.

Any way you slice it, I keep ending up spending >$500.

First world problems.

There are 3 new brush fires south of here.

A friend I have known since the 80s just turned 75 and says Strava puts you in the 75+ group (or something) and doesn't show your KOMs except against other 75+ riders. He was a great climber 30 years ago and can still climb pretty well @ 6 feet and about 140 pounds.
He's pissed about the Strava thing and especially about another 75+ rider having a much better time on a local hill segment. My other friend pointed out that the other 75+ rider's time was close to top 50 out of 1000s of all age group riders for that hill and was obviously an e-bike. Didn't seem to soothe his ego much.

In a way it's kinda cool to know a 75 year old guy who still thinks about such things.

It will probably BE Christmas before I could get one. Mostly backordered.

Obviously, I want a direct drive, but if it's hard to justify $500, it's REAL DANG HARD to justify 2x that much! "But honey! If I spend the $1200 for the Wahoo Kickr, I NEED the extra $600 for the Climb!!!"

The direct drive ones are better, but I have been quite happy with my KICKR Snap.

That said, the rationale for you to make the jump is weak sauce IMO.

Based on increased COVID19 activity I am suggesting my office strongly push for telemedicine visits if at all possible. The staff seem to be giving patients what they want, which are mostly office visits. Lately it’s been about 80% office and 20% telemedicine. I think it should be 80/20 telemedicine.

Sigh.
