Well I'll bump this great Trek thread....
My recently acquired Trek 520 from 1989 (better photos will come later).
Trying to decide if I want to bother with changing over from 27" to 700c wheels.... and If I do, why not go to to an 8/9/? speed Cassette (I got stuck with a 6 speed Freewheel [an Original '89 520 is supposed to have a 7 speed _Cassette_!]--I think somebody switched out the wheels
Any thoughts about upgrading to 700c Wheels & 8/9 speed Cassette?

Recently acquired this unusual Trek Pro Series with full 531c frame. SN shows an '84 braze date, 84/85 components and custom color with pinstripe outline around main lugs, '86 decals.

I have an 84-ish 520. The swap was nothing more than installing a set of 700c wheels. I suppose there might be some variability in the location of the posts (one would expect they had some sort of jig to standardize that though), and I have different canti brakes. Obviously, YMMV. If you've got a 700c front wheel laying about, I'd chuck it in there and see if you can adjust the brake okay.

Don't forget the 1986 "thru the chainstay" cable route that's not in the 84 or 85 catalog.

There are some GORGEOUS Treks on here--really enjoying the early [earlier than what I have] Vintage ones--the graphics and the colors are superb!

I couldnt see a 531 on the fork but any further and my iPhone is falling short. Definately a prime example of what a classic Trek is all about. Now that you mention it I can see the TT1 decal near the BB.

i used to ride a touring Cannondale and swap between 7spd freewheel 27in wheels and 8spd cassette 700C wheels. the only adjustments were to the canti-brake angle and moving my 8spd bar end shifters in and out of friction mode. or were they 7spd index shifters? anyway, you get the idea.
and here's my Trek pics, so as to fit in with the thread:
Trek 1400 ZX bonded aluminum. not sure of the year. 1992? 1990? 1996? it's a cinnamon / burgundy / brown / copper / reddish kind of color.
man - that's a lot of stem showing. think i'm going to switch to some cool old NITTO drop bars and drop the stem a bit. see if i'm still comfortable.

The other day I put the Vuelta Corsa Lites on the '86 760 just to weigh it and see what it looks like. The back wheel needs only a small spreading to install along with minor RD adjustments. Modern wheels are nice but I wont ride the 760 in anything but what it came with. However, the '88 Cannondale Criterium uses this set everyday with a 7sp 12-28 and era downtube shifters.

just tried it & just as I had read--the brakes have to be lowered ~4mm to go from 27" wheels ➜ 700c.

Just bought this '78 TX700 and I'm going to go pick it up this week. Really excited about it. A green TX700 is the bike I've been looking for for years. Even has what looks like 1st gen. Dura Ace. More pictures to come after I pick it up.
