Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have no kitchen knife skills, so it could go either way.

It might be interesting if someone compiled the stats. I know some of the crashes look pretty lame but I'm always shocked by the lameness of some of the crashes in the men's race, too, especially in the first few stages.

The women obviously don't have as much experience doing stage races or long stages. When the Ore-Ida stage race started in the 80s they had 90 mile stages and the thinking before that was that women couldn't handle the distance. My friend and clubmate raced it 3 times, I think, and she said before that her long races were only 40 miles. She knew a group of us were doing mountainous century type rides every Saturday so she came with us for training sometimes. She had to learn to eat on those rides, she had never eaten during a race before.

I think I am going to risk $20 and do it today. Lines will be longer tomorrow, and Tuesday's drawing caused the website to crash for a few hours.

SInce we both made it this far, we've decided to dip our toes into spending some of our savings. So talk to me about some knives of the day. Amazon is the only delivery option we have.

If we ever came into really big money, I'm not sure our marriage would last. My wife and I have very different ideas of how you would handle it. Those mostly center around how much do the relatives get.

I think Mrs John would be happy to live in a cave (climate controlled, of course) and have very little contact with the outside world. I could handle that, but would want to be able to ride with friends, at least sometimes. I might like to travel but I don't think about it much, and I hate flying.

I wonder what our dumpster-diving friend would do if he had a windfall? Would he buy a new bike? Probably not.

In search of longer climbs, we are heading pretty far into central PA this weekend to take on this one:

https://www.strava.com/segments/3397064

It's 2.3 miles at 5.6%. It's not epic, but for my area looks worthy of trying.

Yes. I am always in search of better climbs. The best nearby climbs are either too short (1 mile at 9%) or too shallow (2 miles at 4%) so this one looks like it has promise. It's a bit far to do on a regular basis, but as a "destination ride" I am looking forward to it.

Gotta admit, it's funny.

Not hilarious funny, but I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10 on the funny scale.
