Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You've raced Mount Evans? Doesn't it top out @14K?

I've only ridden a road bike up to 10K. Got nausea pretty bad but was fine after a break. Mountain bike many times up to 9K without issue but did see a kid barf up there after he tried to race a friend of mine.

Single chirp.

Just had the lock ring torqued. Will be lubing the derailleur, and probably regressing the jockey wheel bearings.

Thanks.

crazy in a plane, if we’re up 12,500 for more than 30 mins were required to have oxygen.

Yeah it seems like the only multirotors you see anymore are usually more aimed at photography or cinematography. My little one was a little ready to fly thing that came out pretty close to the peak of FPV racing popularity.

I've never flown a DJI, but from what I can tell they really have it figured out. Truly impressive the kind of footage that comes from such a tiny little thing. They're neat for sure.

Yes and yes.

It's my least favorite race, and I'll keep doing it until I can't. Strange, I know, but that's racing.

Anything sticking?

The drivers in that area are teh worst when it comes to driving in snow/ice - they either seem to think that they shouldn't have to change their driving habits one bit or they think that they have to crawl at 5mph.

nothing sticking. If you think it’s bad here, don’t go to eastern nc. A bunch of lifted trucks that have never seen snow. Possibilities are endless.

I saw that too. I spent way too much time watching him and the gang on TV when I was young.

I need to go visit there sometime and try to ride up some of them. The highest peak I ever rode up was Sandia Crest in NM and it was only a little over 10K.

AFAIK, they are hiking trails, not MTB trails.

I rode up Independence Pass from Aspen back in 2000. 12,095'. Even with only foul weather gear it was somewhat tough to breathe up there despite having ridden fully loaded over some tough passes earlier in the summer. I must have gotten soft.

58 of them things.

My daughter did her first this summer. She's the athlete in the family, and she said it was hard for her.

I found it hard near the summit when I was in my mid-30s and had been living at 8-10k for two weeks. I have also gotten pretty altitude-sick after flying and driving to high places.

More power to them. Walking up a hill is not appealing to me at all, but it's big stuff here to do those things. Many don't have much of a pathway, and there's some actual work involved, so believe me, I'm not minimizing the accomplishments.

Evans and Pikes Peak are the only two that are paved to 14,000 feet. Evans is a treat, simply because the road is so frost-heaved, you take your life in your hands when you descend it. Plus, it may be 75 degrees at the entrance gate, and 35 and wet or windy at the top. Racing it, you pack a drop bag with cold weather gear that they bring to the top for you, but recreational rides to the top, you're on your own

Pikes Peak is steeper, harder, but the road is nice. The weather, like Evans, is subject to whatever Mrs. Nature decides that day. It usually sucks.

Daughter did Sneffels. Her pictures showed a pretty tough climb for someone who is not experienced in mountain climbing. Lots of boulder fields, etc. She said the last mile was really tough.

She was quick to tell me there was no way that I could do it.
