I think it will handle a 36t cassette. I have a Deore 9 speed RD with a 36t cassette.

I think the VO crankset is a rebranded IRD. Also, take a look on eBay. I picked up my IRD crankset brand new for $110.

Dunno what you qualify as heavy, but I'm around 215-220# in cycling gear, and haven't had an issue (or been given a reason to assume an issue) with the 10s on the Mazama or the fat bike.

I just brought this up more out of curiosity , I figure that given touring bikes come with ten speed now, the longevity of each speed increase eventually becomes the same or very close as the previous generation. In my case, it seems that there isn't much of a difference between 7 or 9 speed, and I presume 10. The small difference is worth having smaller jumps between shifts.

velo orange stuff is excellent.
Personally i have used a 24 tooth granny for the past couple of years and it makes for a good low gear. This year i bought a used sugino 94/58 bcd crank so that i could have a smaller cassette. Running 12-28 7 speed with 20,32,42 on the crank. With 700x35 tires it gives me 19 to 93 inches.
