Yes, Lyotatd 460 is right.

Here's a post mortem shot for posterity. There does appear to be a bit of irregularity in the metal and the break occurred at the first step down from the base of the spindle.





Turns out the cranks are indeed French-threaded as I initially suspected. Fortunately, I did find another pair of French threaded pedals in my parts bin, though these appear to not be serviceable. I made a half hearted attempt to remove the "dust cap" though I'm not sure whether it's worth persisting.

I was just complaining that the outer edge of my left calf had been sore the past week or so. Coincidence?

I had a Ritchey SPD pedal break like the OP's. I was standing up and cranking, too. Didn't exactly wreck but it did hurt.
