Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hi,

New forum member, new road bike rider.

Never ridden a bike with gears, but have been lurking on this forum for a couple of months. I took the plunge and bought a bike yesterday at the LBS. They had a used 2003 Fuji Professional, with DuraAce components and a lot of other good features. The frame is aluminum with carbon fork, seat post and stays. It's a really light bike.

It really hurts my groin and rear to ride it, but I understand this is normal for a little while. I think that I may need a little better fit, adjusting the seat down a notch and maybe change the angle of the handlebars. The bike came with clipless pedals, but I don't have the confidence or shoes to use them yet. I did pick a helmet and some shorts, need to get a pump, some tools and a tire gauge.

I am probably going to get a different computer and remove the extra handlebar attachment (name?).

They're called aerobars.

Are you going to go clipless in the near future? Those platforms look out of place on such a nice ride.

Yes, but I have no idea how to shop for them. Like I said, I have some clipless pedals, but I don't know how to buy shoes for them. I imagine I just take the pedal in and the can tell me. I am barely able to ride right now, don't know anything about gears. It's rather difficult to start up, I am usually in too difficult a gear to get up to speed, and I fear I am going to fall over all the time. When I do get up to speed, between 8 and 13 miles, I wobble from side to side. I think I need to become a much stronger rider before I go and lock my legs in.

Thanks for telling me what my aerobars are. They're coming off, at least until I can get riding with more confidence.

Hawt. But I must make the obligatory "flip it" comment.

Let me guess. "Flip it" = invert the stem? I'll get right on that tonight.

I love it man. I don't have much to compare it with as its my first road bike, but i did test ride the Specialized Allez Sport (too compact), the Scott Speedster S2 (wasn't a big fan), and three different Treks, 1200/1500/2100 (liked them all, the 2100 the best, of course). I could tell the diff between the Lemond and all of the aluminum bikes easily, despite being a novice. The Lemond just seemed to ride smoother, and felt better.

Hey Guys,

I am new to this forum, and relativly new to road biking(but have been mountain biking for about 2 years). I am 13, and want to start racing road bikes soon, so I got a used(but VERY lightly used) Trek 1000.

I don't have a picture because it is on loan (indefinately) in Dallas (I'm in Oklahoma). I was a roadie back in High School in the flatlands of South Texas. I road on a 1988 Raleigh Technium 460 which is still in use by a kid who needs it more than I do. I upgraded the non-areo break levers to aero. I also put on now extinct Sampson clipless pedals--you know the one with the cleat that hangs down in the back (LOOK in the front and this big thing hanging down in the back. I've got great trails near me so I mostly do MTN biking--though when I get the funds I'll be buying a good entry level road bike for conditioning purposes.
