Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Maybe less aerosol, but more virus. That's why they stick the swab up your nose for the test.

I just had a spit test this afternoon. Much nicer; about as sensitive.

We still have a very hard time getting testing for our patients. I would have hoped it would be easier by now but it's snot.

Well, at least we have tropical weather, turquoise water, pristine coral reefs, beautiful rain forest, and 10000 meter peaks.

weather is beautiful in long island.

My hills are not long or distinguished, more of just annoying. I would hope I have gotten stronger, it would be nice to do the old scalper route to see if I PR everything.

Old news but the South Park pandemic special is pretty funny.

Day 4 of 25 days of Big Boys in service! With UP 4004, we really are spoiled for choice among the old images. I'll drop a few more in the comments, but I think this one is pretty amazing.
Per the RRPictureArchives website, this is from New Year's Day, 1955, at Cheyenne. "Author" Neil R. Miller, collection of Wil Hata.
Also, this one is on static display in a park in Cheyenne.

The thing that amazes me is that the one that the UP Steam program restored had been sitting outside for DECADES on display. Imagine trying to restore a car that had been sitting outside "on static display" for decades. That's how monstrously big and heavy all the parts are - you don't have to worry about things like the boiler degrading, for example.

The sad thing is, to me, the shear number of steam locomotives that were scrapped. Pennsylvania Railroad made a point of preserving one sample of each of their most prominent classes of locomotive, and you can see them now in Strasburg at the museum. But I think most railroads just junked all but one or two. Southern Pacific 'donated' a couple of their old 4-6-2 Pacifics to fairgrounds and such, and at least one was restored.

I understand the business reason behind it, of course - they were so thoroughly superceded by diesels that they lost al value to the company. Still, it's sad.

Hmm... when my Hammer died in the spring they weren't even able to order. They placed an order in July (for their own stock) and when I emailed the owner yesterday about whether they could get one in, she said she had just gotten the shipping notice and it arrived this morning. Meanwhile, CC and others have them. I think this dovetails with what Psimet said over in the "let's hear it for your LBS" thread. Sadly, it seems they're getting squeezed for stock.

I ordered a Direto XR instead, a little cheaper, performs well and I don’t have to buy a cassette. It should be here the 21st.

The only place I could find an H3 was Amazon and I don’t have the tools to install my own cassette so that made my mind up for me.

Saris website claims they're "Available to ship in 5-7 business days."

I'm stuck with my TravelTrac Comp Fluid dumb trainer, and trusting Zwift's Zpower estimation.

The Saris estimate isn’t up to date I don’t think.

I’ve been using a dumb trainer until I get this one. I sold an old bike I never ride to avoid the wife giving me a hard time about spending that much on a trainer.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

I tried Zwift back in August when the air around here was poisonous with smoke, and it seemed to work well. So I went ahead and bought a subscription. Since then, the air has mostly been pretty good, and the weather nice for riding, so I feel like I'm not really using it enough. But then yesterday, I headed out for a ride at 4:30 and didn't get back till 6:15 and it was getting about as dark as I'm comfortable riding in. Two weeks, and it'll be Standard Time again and sunset at 5:00.

I think the value of Zwift is highly individualized, based on your situation.

I only have my subscription active during the off season, roughly December through March, and I use it when outside conditions are unsafe. That means I use it only 1-3x/week for 4 months out of the year. It makes an hour on the trainer tolerable and even sometimes fun when I do group rides with friends and we chat using Discord. The real-time voice chat is a huge help, IMO, and I wonder why Zwift never put this feature in. It would be fairly easy to do, I think.
