Swell deal on a fixer-upper. SR Touring bike (51cm?) with original racks. Appears to be in pretty good shape for $75. I'd take it on as a project if I had a destination in mind and wasn't trying to buy my first home.

I posted that a couple days ago when it was selling at $125. I'm about to explode. The frame is interesting enough. The arabesque and and front rack are worth at least $100. Why oh why did I promise not to +1 for a while? Aaaaaargh. I love that groupset and I don't have one.

That is somewhat disappointing, but not a total deal breaker. I have this half formed idea in my head of building something well, kinda gaudy. Like the overly fanciful cruisers but mated horribly with the sensibilities of this forum. Think fanciful lugs, outlandish paint, chrome and color. I guess the best way to put it would be to take many of the fine and beautiful builds seen around here and then start again with all decisions weighed toward form over function, rather than the other way 'round. It's probably a silly idea, but this is the sort of garbage my brain likes.

Man, another '86 Nuovo Sport came up for sale, just like mine, same size and the same price I paid. Someone please snag it up. I don't need another bike but a few more days looking at it and I'll probably buy it. It's a very sweet ride.

I'd second that - I was pleasantly surprised by how nicely mine rides. I'd describe it as "riding light" - that is, it feels lighter and more nimble while riding than its weight would suggest. It's not heavy, but mine is probably 26 lbs or so.

Heck, with careful selection of component parts (and even WITH heavy-ish 27x1-1/8 Pasela PTs!) my double-butted '84 Viva Sport weighed in at only 24.15 pounds. I cut almost 1.5 pounds off stock specs.

This is from a flipper in town whose work I don't trust after a bad buy. The one bike I picked up from him, fully overhauled, first time I pulled on the front brake lever, the damn cable shot out through the lever. BB was almost 1.5 turns loose. One of the pedals was cross-threaded. This specific bike started at $1499, been slowly heading south from there. Expectit to drop to $699 within the next 2-3 weeks. Been running for about 6 weeks now.

Silver 58cm Miyata 912. This bike purchased new by a very accomplished biker and mechanic. Soon after purchasing, he upgraded to Campagnolo Record rear derailleur and Dura Ace crank and Cinelli bars. Before moving to FL last winter he completely repacked the bottom bracket and headset along with rebuilding the hubs. Everything is buttery smooth. This was just one of his bikes and it was used moderately as he put it. 912 is the top Miyata semi-pro model - not even counting the upgrades done to it. Frame and fork are triple butted and splined, making it highly engineered, light, and fun to ride. Selle Italia Turbo saddle is original vintage in very nice shape. Wheels are Ukai 700c on Shimano hubs.

I like the way you think, anyway. The bike in the photo below was one I built last winter, with the primary purpose of using that fabulous Velo Orange Plume Alaire chainguard on an actual bike. So the design brief was to build a quintessential French "Velo de Ville" - what we call City Bike - around that chainguard. Any component that didn't fit harmoniously with that piece was rejected. It had to have gears, because I live at the top of a very steep hill, but derailleurs were a no-go, so I selected the 8-speed Nexus. The bike rides very well as-configured, and it really draws a lot of attention when parked. Is something like this what you had in mind?
