I am very happy with this bicycle, because it is a rare NOS of this builder, I find it , not on the LBC but on a flea market...Henri CHARDONNET was a local champion and , after, he was builder in TOULON on the south of France, he built some bicycles with B.CARRE frames and after, with CIZERON frames (CIZERON makes also frames for Frncesco MOSER bicycles).
H.CHARDONNET was renowned for an excellent builder of pretty bicycles with nice colours and finish and this one has a pretty look and an original 36_52 crankset ...a "compact" in 1965...probably because the Mt FARON was near H.CHARDONNET store ...

A very nice machine, @papik. It resembles one of my favorite rides, the Gitane I put together last year, right down to the brake levers and the steel 'compact' chain set (mine's a 50/38 iirc). Yours looks better, though. I dig that gold color.
Nice GITANE, probably of the same period...is your crank set a "SOLIDA" ?

If it does not have super high line components (like Campy C Record/Delta) that is quite high for any 979. Good examples with decent components have been usually selling for around $300ish or high $200's bought at such prices unfortunately, in some cases, to just harvest the good C&V components on them, Otherwise the market value of a VGC 979 frame these days had been around the $195 mark in the past few years now. Like most C&V aluminum/bonded framed bikes, the prices had been depressed all these years mainly because of paranoia/rumors that are constantly spread about such bikes asploding the minute you ride them....

is not have super high components is has mixed parts. I was almost ready do trade. The person have the bike is wanted to trade the vitus 979 with two steel bikes i have. One is 2002 the other is 1987. Finally i tell no in that trade. Is not worth i give my two steel road bikes for that vitus 979 bike. The vitus 979 is weight 19 pounds. where i can found steel bike 19 pounds or aluminum but with high end components and not cost high money? My steel bikes is weight around 25 pounds and 27 pounds even i put lighter wheels in the 27 pounds bike the weight stay high. I want put fulcrum racing T wheels in the 25 pounds bike. I want see how many pounds is go lose with that wheels

Thanks. The chain rings came off either a Solida or Nervar crank set I found on a cheap mixte, I don't remember which. The cranks and spindle are Stronglights.

?: what is the significance of rotating the wheels so that the valve stems are obscured by the brake calipers? a photographic detail you prefer?

Not a pic of the whole bike but just a new component. We've been having trouble shifting the front on the tandem. So today I swapped out the FD for another Simplex that I had picked up as a backup, "just in case". BTW, the bike is an '82 Peugeot TH8, definitely C&V, definitely French.

Oh, I wouldn't know. I'm asking because for a few years Bertin apparently sold bikes made by a cousin in Belgium. I have one which I was told was probably a C-32. Two curious features are it was powder-coated at the factory instead of painted, and the rear stays are painted chrome. It seems to have been a feature of Belgian bikes. (It's not a great bike but sure looks nice.)

No, they're at the labels. What you see at the brake calipers are the plasti-dipped wheel guides, I think.

Here's my 1974 Peugeot U 08- I just finished it. This is my first resto- probably not my last. It rides really well, and my LBS thinks it came out of some time warp LOL. Thanks for the nice forum :-)

Henri CHARDONNET, the builder ,has frequently installed Italians parts on his bikes,for exemple, my first CHARDONNET (more recent) was made with OFMEGA cranks...
These UNIVERSAL brakes are an Italian imitation of the MAFAC S , they was cheaper and of lower quality of the MAFAC S , (don't forget that this bike is an entry level CHARDONNET)
