Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mayo and hot sauce can be great on the right sandwiches, too. Since we're talkin' low-cal, lighter fare, something like a fried shrimp sandwich is a great vehicle for mayo + hot sauce.

Affirmative. Seafood and spicy heat work together very nicely.

Fat and protein? Cripes, look at the SODIUM!!!

Joking. We weren't exactly talking light fare.

I mean, other than my stumping for light mayo.

All this sandwich talk and I'm over here doing the prep work for pizza tonight. (The Danish whisk worked nicely on the pizza dough, datlas, though I had to make a modification and pry the coils apart a bit - they were catching and holding stuff a la an Epilady.)

It's got electrolytes!

Homemade mayo is good and not hard to make. And you can flavor it lots of ways.

Apropos of which, my siblings and I were discussing FitBits and health-tracking smartphone apps. Seems as if these things both fail to track exercise you're doing (my brother who walks every day has only walked 0.3 miles this week, per his iPhone), or they can be spoofed (my sister mentioned a woman she knew who increased her daily step count by sitting at her desk, swinging her arm).

Did you ever have their veggie hoagie mentioned? Amazing. Voted best in the city. They used pesto. The owner and his wife got divorced and couldn’t amicably split up the assets so they closed.

I'm with you on the light mayo. I like pesto and olive oil, and use both a lot, but I like a mayo on my sammies.

I married a Lousyanna girl, and in her world a fried shrimp po-boy is a light dinner alternative to the good stuff. Of course, most everything can come fried down there, and if you ask for something grilled you are likely to get a mouth full of backlash.

There was another sandwich place around here that made a prosciutto sandwich - a surprisingly thick stack of thinly sliced prosciutto on focaccia slathered with a olive oil/parsley/garlic spread that would kill a vampire at 10 paces. It was good, but you ended up drinking water all afternoon.

Never went. But there was a Hog Island Hoagie place on 11th street near Jefferson I went to a few times that was quite good. I expect they are gone too.
