Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1. 101 miles
2. 40 miles
3. Depends. racing with people faster than me and trying to hang with them: as little as 5 miles. Touring or leisure rides: around 75-80 miles. * all hurt distances are subject to extreme variance depending on terrain, other riders, weather and how I'm feeling.*
4. 7,500 km for the year and complete the Century ride I do faster than last year. I'm at 4,000km now but have done no training for the century.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? 156 miles

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? meh... 40-ish miles

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? 2 miles with the right group.

4) Do you have a distance goal? Not any more. Distance riding can be addictive and pushing for that next great distance becomes difficult. After a while you can get it down to a science then it just becomes hours and hours and hours of sitting in a saddle. Personally I found that I can get a better workout and still beat my head against the wall in just a 30 minute crit.

I'd have to break this into 2 lifetimes:

My previous life (+20 years ago)

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? A double century - 200 miles

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? Working up to the double century we did multiple centuries, and other long rides including the Assault on Mt. Mitchell

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? After about 70 miles...

4) Do you have a distance goal? It was the double century...I still can't believe I did that.

Currently...

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? A century - actually 104 miles

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? Working up to the century we did several weeks of 50 - 75 mile rides

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? After about 50 miles...

4) Do you have a distance goal? I wanted to do a century and I did

1) 192+ miles (though I've signed up to do a 400K and a 1000K next month)
2) ~125 miles
3) Depends on the terrain, the pace, the weather, etc.
4) 600K in <24hrs; 1200K+ in <56hrs

1) 180km with 5400m of climbing. Or 200km flat just the other day.

2) 60-80km is a typical training ride, but 100-120km usually once a week.

3) If I eat and drink well, I'm usually good to go. The 5400m of climbing was killer at the end (Alpe d'Huez).

4) No real distance goal. I have a goal to ride every road on Fyn before I leave (not quite going to make it, though).

1. 150 miles
2. 60+ miles is a pretty routine Saturday ride.
3. Depends on how hard I'm riding and how good a job I've been doing of eating and drinking. That said, my butt usually starts to get a little sore after about 75 miles.
4. No.

1. 101 miles
2. 50-60 miles
3. 70-80
4. Maybe being able to bang out less painful centuries.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on?
600k. I slept for 4.5 hours after 200 miles, so maybe we just count the 200 miles as a ride? In that case it was 400k continuous.

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride?
35 weekly, 100 monthly

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage?
Does not compute. My 15 mile loop hurts, but that's intensity. At 400k a lot of things started going on... mental things, physical things... but nothing really *hurt*.

4) Do you have a distance goal? If so then what?
I'd like to do a 24 hour challenge and see what I can manage in that time, and next year I hope to do PBP, 1200k.

Longest is 260miles
In training I did monthly 100 miles rides. Normal rides were 40miles.
It doesn't hurt, you just get tired. I always feel a little uncomfortable around the 5-10mile mark but it passes. Want to hurt? Do intervals.
I'd like to do a 400mile one day.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? 276km

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? 110km

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? 140km

4) Do you have a distance goal? If so then what? Nothing specific, but if could do a coast to coast (about 300km) without dying (or sleeping) it would be cool.

Madness is wasting your life and never doing anything. I'm a randonneuring novice, but four brevets have provided memories that will last the rest of my life.

1. 75 miles

2. 42 mile A ride

3. It's really about mileage, more about time and effort. If I'm doing a decent long distance pace, hour three is about the mark. However, it generally depends on how I'm feeling. I could be feeling good for longer than that, or feel like crap after one hour.

4. Again, it's not really about distance. I would like to do 100 miles, but then again I wouldn't because it would take a while. I'd rather have a more dedicated training schedule that's going to make me faster.

I read it and think "nutter"!!

But it has been an adventure!! I have absolutely no regrets getting into Long Distance cycling, and want to get back into it again. Through LD cycling, I've had the opportunity to travel and see several countries, as well as getting to know the area where I live. And through LD cycling I have met many great people ... one of whom I married.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? 200 Miles, this year

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? 65 Miles is the 'usual' weekender

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? Varies during the season, but 85-90 on a century ride

4) Do you have a distance goal? If so then what? I did, it was 200 miles - now I don't need to do that again

1. 200km
2. 100km
3. Depends on effort. If I'm taking it easy, won't feel any hurt. If I go full effort, around 80km.
4. Don't have one.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? 118 miles. CFC 2009 had like 10,000 feet of climbing

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? 75 miles long ride usually

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" depends on the ride, racing hurts really bad from the start, especially crits.

4) Do you have a distance goal? If so then what? I like to do 250 miles a week, but have been enjoying yoga a lot lately.

1) What is the longest ride you've ever been on? 101 mi

2) What is your longest distance in a training (something repeated weekly or monthly) ride? Generally ride between 17 and 20 miles/day. Usually one day get up to about 25-30 mi though

3) What do you consider your "this is starting to hurt" mileage? Depends on climbing, flat I'd say 75-80 mi, Really hilly though and it would be much sooner.

4) Do you have a distance goal? If so then what? Shooting for 5000 miles/yr. Currently around 2600 for this year. With a mild fall and early winter and I think I have a chance, if the weather turns ugly in October I probably won't.

1. 120mi

2. I do 15-16mi every day (Commute), but I usually mix in some longer rides, anywhere from 40-70mi a couple of times a week.

3. My last two centuries I did it was right around mile 95, but those were both on my fixed gear, so I'm not sure how I'd feel on my road bike.

4. I would like to do a 1-day 200miler, tough to do in VT with all the climbing, but definitely feasible
