Looks like the old Bontrager wheels people had trouble with about eight or ten years ago. Everyone was pulling drive side spokes out of the rear rim.

Not just Bontrager though I have had it happen to one of those on my wife's bike. I've pulled spokes through Neuvation, Mavic and Ambrosio rims too . . . it's just how rims die around my house. Of course, I build the wheel back up with new spokes, same hub, new rim. I have one dead wheel (same cause) in the garage to rebuild now, in fact. That one was a Mavic; all have been aluminum alloy.

It's always after a huge number of miles have been put on them so I'm not complaining; just saying that seems to be the way it is for me.

Me, too. Had that happen on at least a dozen rear wheels over the years. Maybe more like 15.

Assumptions:
1. Non-racing
2. Average pavement
3. Gravel travel only in a bind (<0.001%)
4. No curb-jumping
5. Bike stored indoors
6. Average maintenance
7. Fair weather (dry) rides

What's your estimate/experience?

Edit: Aluminum, Rim Brakes
I got a zillion miles from a set of Mavic Open Pro wheels. I knew it was time to replace them because the braking surface was getting "dangerously" worn (thin). Other than that they were in great shape.

I have a pair of wheels that I bought in 87. Shimano 600 hubs, Weinmann front and non descript rear. Not sure of the total mileage, they've been on many centuries (six in the summer of 06) and was my main bike for years. I guess I'm not that rough on wheels, even at 200 + lbs and they are still in great shape. The part that really impresses me are the hubs they are still really smooth. So smooth that I bought a second pair of the hubs for my Vitus.

Sorry I can't add much but I have Mavic Aksiums and Ksyrium Elites that have been bullet proof for a decade. Have hit pot holes at 40 mph and never went out of true. Mavic for me.
