My new KMC jumps on the smallest cog, possibly when the quick link passes. 10 speed. My Ultegra didn't have a quick link.

your cassette is worn thats why.

when a chain wears to lets say 1% then the cassette and chain ring also wears to 1% and if you simply put a new chain on there you are running a 0% chain on a 1% drivetrain. so it will skip on the lowest 1-3 cogs. until the chain is worn to the same wear as the cassette again. and then you could just as well continue to use the old chain!!

the smallest cogs wear faster since they have fewer teeth. 11 instead of 30=3x the wear.

either you swap everything or nothing imo. thats how it works. unless you swap before 0,75% wear.

you will just "force" wear on your new chain by putting a new chain on old cass. money in the toilet.

This is also why people should ride 8 and 9sp instead of 11 and 12sp since it cost almost nothing to swap a new cassette and chain in. 25€ for both for me. at most. chain ring last twice as long. I still buy the cheapest ones in steel.

I hear that a lot on here, but i've never had a problem before. This is the newest, lowest mileage cassette i have. I have lots of bikes, i have a 7sp, 8sp and 9sp on other bikes, the 7 and 9 are ancient (1990s). No problems. So with this one being on only it's second chain and maybe three years old maximum, it's just not due such issues.

If you've got a 6-speed bike, almost all 6-speeds used the same spacing as 5-speed freewheels. (There was a 6-speed ultra that used 7-speed spacing; but I never saw one.) So a 5-speed chain will work, or at most a 7-speed chain; and they're dirt cheap. In fact more expensive, narrower 9+ speed chains probably won't even work.

You're pretty universal on derailleurs up to 9sp. Some 5s were a bit chunky on the pins, but otherwise a 5,6,7 speed chain will fit an 8sp cassette as well as the former three. Even though there's a gnats pube difference in spacing.

9s require a 9s chain though, and there on.
