Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This, although I wouldn't say the PM is too necessary as long as the HRM is working properly. Don't go over 70% of max. Up a hill, don't go over 80%.

Nothing wrong with riding slow and enjoying it. But many posts are from people saying they can't lose weight despite riding several hours weekly. I'm guessing the complainers are riding 10 mph and eating lots to give them energy

That said I just bought a beach cruiser with upright bars and wide tires. I'm using it for slow neighborhood cruises. I may not be even going 10 mph at times

When you exercise, eventually endorphins starts to get you going. The more there are the faster you want to go. The faster you go the more get produced.
Going hard or fast is fun too. Nothing wrong with getting stronger either. It makes hills and speed easier, which is more fun so you can go faster! It's an ongoing "cycle".

Ride with a slower person
Ride with somebody who also wants a slow ride and make sure you can talk easily.
Take a camera, ride in a scenic area, and promise yourself you'll take pictures along the ride.
Ride in urban areas with stop signs each block.

I too have the problem of starting a ride intending to take it easy. I'm not wired to ride easy if I have energy to go faster.

On days I am lazy but need to ride, I tell myself to just get on the bike for a short easy spin. Once I'm on the bike I end up pushing myself anyhow.

I agree that the PM is not needed; although desired by many it is out of the range of many. Keep it in Z2 and you will return with fresh legs. With some good interval work ( important ) you will be in better shape than the " stuck in the middle " HR crowd. There is plenty of evidence to point to the benefits of not training in the middle, especially studies of older riders who incorporated high intensity workouts and Z@ workouts into their routine. They lose less VO2 max than those who don't have high intensity workouts.

I have this "problem" as well. Wake-up-my-legs rides almost always turn into harder efforts.

I find that having a more disciplined schedule helps. When the hard days are actually really hard, the easy days tend to stay easy.

Disclaimer: Not a racer.

I just ride with relatives. I have no other choice than to crawl along at 10mph, otherwise I leave them behind. Riding alone I do for sanity, and lactic acid pool is the only speed I want, that with chemical brothers

I have this exact problem and I NEVER use a bike computer. However, going hard doesn't ruin the ride for me. It makes me like it more. The problem comes up when I know I should be going easy on the legs.

I agree with the folks who say it comes down to bike choice. When I am in jeans on my fixie I don't give one single crap who passes me. When I'm all johnny-racered up I feel like I have to make a showing.
