I haven't seen my family since August 2019. I was hoping all year I could make it up by Thanksgiving. Nope. With the vaccine roll out I am hoping by April 2021. My Mom is 82.
In other news I am at lunch eating in my car in a parking lot. I am skipping the company Thanksgiving lunch. SMFH

2020 has sucked. It’s why we’re going through the measures we are so we can see family. I can’t imagine there is more risk in our small gathering than there is going to the store. All of us stocked up on food, do curbside contactless shopping only and don’t go anywhere (except outdoor rides on empty roads).
Oh, and I’ll get a vaccine.

I would have to ask my epidemiology colleagues what the picture would look like if a 90% effective covid19 vaccine were accepted by say 50% of the population....I am thinking it would help bigly but would not be like polio or measels.

Sure, it's always a consideration, but what irks me is the context. If it were accompanied by, "if you want to get together with your family for the holidays, here are some actions that you should consider to protect you and your loved ones: 1) self-quarantine preceding the gathering 2) get tested before going, 3)...4)..."
But instead, this is something being passed around by the most cavalier, those that think it's a nothingburger (to borrow a term from another thread) and who have been treating precautionary measures as something between an inconvenience and a trampling of rights. These are *exactly* the kinds of people that shouldn't be gathering, yet their voices are being amplified by the echo chamber.

I thought one began to talk in terms of herd protection at about a 60% immunity rate, but maybe I heard wrong and I can't find numbers in a quick search.

Considering whether I should register for the virtual turkey trot we do every year, as it benefits a local charity and as much as I don’t care for virtual events, it’s a good cause that should be supported.

Holidays don't matter to me. I don't get why some people expect you to be there on Thanksgiving and Christmas when they are no different than any other day. I'd rather visit my parents when nothing is going on so I can have some good time with them as opposed to times when it is so busy that no one can relax.

It just wouldn't be the holidays without constantly checking the time and thinking about all the people who are going to be upset because you're later than they expected.

Seriously? Who doesn't like going to 2-3 different houses for Thanksgiving or Christmas all on the same day?

I'd like to go to my sister's in the spring or summer rather than in the winter (dumb), but I don't make the rules.

Also, flying into the northeast in winter is teh dumbs. Too big a chance of flight issues, not to mention being unacclimated to the weather.

That all changed after my folks and I moved to northern Il. My father bought a V35 Bonanza that made the trip to the family hometown about an hour long, and 4 years ago I started dating my now wife who has a very blended family so it went from the holidays being one event to coordinating visits to 2-3 different households. Thankfully Christmas has never been a big huge event for our family, but the last few years I've been at 3 different celebrations within a 18 hour period beginning Christmas Eve evening.
I also enjoy the constant management of food intake, balancing the things that you genuinely look forward to and the things that you feel obligated to eat. Okay, if I can get away with only a token serving of Uncle James' turkey and gravy, and I factor in a 20 minute post-meal cool-down before a sliver of pie, then add the 45 minute drive to Alice's, I'll only feel slightly ill after 5 or 6 pierogi and I should be able to get in one or two of Anna's cookies...
