I have listened to Debussy's Arabesque 2 three times in a row now while at my desk. Light, breezy, playful, wonderful!

When TOB was 5 or 6 and still REALLY into steam engines, UP ran an excursion with their 3985 Challenger, to Seattle and back. He and I flew up to Portland and rode for a day, out to Hinkle Oregon, where we stayed overnight before catching Amtrak's Pioneer back to Portland and then back home.
He had a wonderful time and remembers none of it. Ah, well.

I missed my chance to catch Big Boy in person within the last year when it was in California last, bummed I didn't make the time to go see it. I have watched a bunch of the videos taken of train chasers driving along a frontage road pacing it on its travels around the US, super cool that it's running again these days.
My dad has always been a bit of a train nerd and I've followed suit though a bit more casually. I believe he still has his old VHS copy of the Last of the Giants that we watched a few times when I was a kid. It's what sparked my (admittedly moderate) interest in steam and overall interest in trains.

Oh yeah. I forgot. Some good times up there but it's been too long. My ex and I went on the glass bottom boat one time. It cruises around the lake and it was cold that day. She thought it was very romantic.
One time I was up there and there was a wooden boat show on the north shore. Lots of Chris Craft and others. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
A friend has a house on the Nevada side up high near Kingsbury Grade. She can access mtb and hiking trails from her house. On the 4th of July some of us were staying there and hiked a little to see the fireworks over the lake. That was a fun trip. Lots of mountain biking and just riding around the south shore to see the sights and riding up to Lilly lake.
Gone to the casinos a couple times but I'm not a gambler. Did have some good food and watched some sparring sessions at a ring set up outside before a fight card.
I've done the road ride around the lake a few times. It's nice but there is lot of car traffic in one section.

If you get the chance, go to Sunnyside for dinner one of the nights, It's just over a couple miles south of Tahoe City proper. It was the family favorite and we made sure to go at least once every visit. I recall there typically being a few absolutely gorgeous wooden power boats docked there, usually Chris Craft.

Which part of Tahoe are you going to? You mentioned Truckee so I'm going to assume Tahoe City/Northlake area. I grew up going there multiple times a year with my parents, such a beautiful area and plenty of outdoor stuff to do and see.

It's been too long since I've listened to some Dave Alvin. Thanks for the bump. Later

Big evening of folk/bluegrass on the square today! Featuring the cutest bass player around, and this ain't even a very good picture of her.

And Tahoe/Truckee - went for a friend of my wife's wedding a few years ago. Had a total blast. Wish I had a bike. Spent most of the trip in Truckee, hiking, jogging, and partying! Would love to go back and cycle the roads and trails more extensively, and visit other sides of the lake. When we first arrived (after driving in from SAC) we stopped to meet some of the betrothed's family for a beer at Squaw Valley. I think they call it Palisades now? Anyway, I had never seen a Ski Resort like that, just dinky so-cal ones. I was blown away by the scale. Amazing.

The first one I remember was at Cass, WV, when I was ten or so. I don't blame the boy for not remembering, I only have really vague memories of anything before the age of 8.

Things were a lot more mellow for the UP844 trips. Maybe the snow sidelined some folks during this one, it sure was nice.

In other rail news, I saw this officer's special this morning, it was camped out on the siding by the ol' freight depot overnight.
Barry Sprofera got out and got pics as it headed east, must be about Cosnino or Winona, somewhere in there...

One of the nice things about zombie thread resurrection is that you often see names you hadn't in a long time. Fiestbob (perma-ban) comes to mind.
