Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling Sunglasses with High Prescription

Does anyone wear cycling or sports sunglasses with a high prescription?

I'm nearsighted and have a relatively high prescription (-10.5 diopter right eye and -8 diopter left eye).

If so, what do you wear?

Thanks!

I wear black Ray-Ban Wayfarer II's with regular presciption plastic lenses. I chose not to go with the high index stuff for these. They are thick on the outside edge but they were not very expensive. They are a dark tint so you dont really notice the lense thickness.

+1 Inexpensive frames with Polarized lenses. The only problems is needing regular glasses if it gets dark.

I wear -6 and -6.25, no idea what those numbers mean, but my eye person (who is a cyclist) looked high and low for anything, even brands he didn't carry. He couldn't find anything for me, and I've been pestering him for 4 years now. Oakley seems to get higher and higher but last I checked they were just below my prescription (like 5.5 or so).

have a look at the Rudy Project glasses
they have quite a few designs with Rx inserts. Most of their line is styled simular to Oakleys. Im about to be looking to buy a set soon for myself. Im tired of having to use contacts when i wanna use my oakleys and oakley Rx lenses are crazy priced even thou im -4.5 diopter

Check out this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ghlight=insert

I saw a lot of good info here. Also, I bought some Oakley's and they didn't work for me (details in the thread), so switched to Rudy Project Exception with the insert and love them so far. Only 3 rides in, but will post a review once I have a few more rides under my belt.

I love my Rudy Project RB3s with insert. I'm -4.5 in one eye and -4.00 in the other and they seem to work just fine. Not the cheapest in the world, but, they weren't much different than any other prescription sunglasses I've had.

I don't remember how far you can go with them, though. There is an online store that I stumbled across that claims they can go to almost -9 with some of their stuff. It was specifically a sport optics store.

Oakley...
They custom cut all of the lenses specifically for the application/buyer. Only way to fly in my book...

My prescription is -6.5 and -7.25. After trying inserts and non-cycling specific sunglasses, I bought a pair of photochromatic glasses from Optilabs in the UK and have been completely satisfied. They are basic, plastic lenses built into a smaller, full, modest-wrap frame. The PC lenses do not get as dark are regular tints, but it's a nice feature to have when riding in the early am or at dusk. Check 'em out.

In my personal experience, this doesn't work for high prescriptions (and I'm only at -4.5). The lens is curved, and with a high prescription, it has to get really thick on the edges to compensate. This results in vertigo.

Last time I walked into a Pearle Vision looking for some nice glass lens driving sunglasses, I saw two or three sport/Oakley type glasses on the rack which they make prescription.

I'd just go there and ask. Lens Crafters isn't bad either.

Another dumb question along this line: where do you go to get the frames/glasses you want? Your regular eye doctor or the LBS or whoever sells cycling glasses? No idea.

sportsRX.com. Oakleys do not work for strong presciptions. I have Rudy Project Kaylos.

My prescription is like -7.5 and -8.something. I've had a pair of Adidas Gazelles with insert. The insert holds the prescription portion, and then the rest of the glasses are curved around that. They were pricey but I've been using them for over four years now and love 'em. As another poster mentioned, the only problem comes when you go into someplace dark.

I bought them from Sportique Eyewear in Boulder: https://sportiqueeyewear.com/

I'm a little late to the party but I also have a very high prescription and found this thread while I was shopping and thought I would report my findings. I found a company called ADS Sports Eyewear (www.adseyewear.com) online that was able to make vented prescription lenses for an Oakley Racing Jacket. My prescription is well over the Oakley Rx limits but ADS was still able to help. They utilize almost the same free-form lens design that Oakley uses. I went with brown transitions lenses and I will definitely go back for a standard polarized pair of lenses since the Racing Jacket makes it very easy to swap them. I entered my prescription wrong online and they noticed then immediately called me to let me know and clear it up. Very friendly people. Very professional.

Yea... I found a few threads on this site where I found good information but ended up taking a tip from a friend. Just wanted to share because I am pretty stoked about being able to see this well. It's kinda crazy.
