Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It is not HR Giger...there are actually professionals called biomechanists that work in labs to help people perform any kind of physical activity better.

Just the first one. They had to change the design repeatedly, because Giger likes to put genitalia in his drawings a lot. Cameron did the design for the rest.

Bikes: none

yea, your straining your forearms, at some point you will learn to take the weight off your arms. i can skid with no hands. at first i was putting all my weight on my bars, and when i did a long one, my right forearm ached. then i felt what the action was made of, and realized i overused my arms. find a way to use your legs, the bike, and your weight. the more you push on your bars, the less your arms do.

someone was telling me today that skidding is really bad for your frame, that it puts a grip of pressure/tork on the chainstays/seatstay anyone have an opinion on this?

What, you want a frame to last forever?
Actually I can't see how skidding is any worse than torqueing a tall gear up a hill or sprinting. In fact, resisting would be putting the same torque as skidding. Can said person skid? Perhaps it's a case of sour grapes.

yeah...tell that person to buy a better bike....or in the case they have a full out custom bike already...tell them to take it back and buy a better bike....

i would say skidding would tweak your wheelset...long before it would ever mess with your frame...hell i'm over 215lbs...lol

and i have never tweaked a wheel or felt a frame of anytype flex from skids, hops or anything like that...i mean a friend of mine swears he skid off a tubbie from the rim...but he always adds inches to his fish stories, so unless he shows me a picture, or then if so it was because he did something wrong in changing his tire..

my point is....

To put it in perspective:
Everything you do on your bike shortens it's lifespan. If you want a frame to last forever don't ride it. Riding a track bike on the street shortens it's lifespan, doing hills shortens it's lifespan, skidding shortens it's lifespan, riding in the rain shortens it's lifespan, etc. Might as well enjoy the thing while you have it rather than hanging it on the wall.

hey yo nyrie, it's ur friend in santa cruz evan!

i have definitely experienced that pain ur talking about when i first started skidding with my stupid 80's road drop bars.. I switched over to super long time trial bull horns that give me much better position on long and short skids, no more pain (just my knees lol). i just got a super long stem also so i can put my entire body like 75% on my front wheel no prob and i can skid for 2 miles!! we have 2 go for a ride someday k! take it easy!

Evan! what's up? Long time no see. You talking about that purple fixie? That ride was hot. I don't think i'm going to change my bars but I'll try leaning way forward and taking pressure off my poor little arm. You have to come visit soon.
