Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? The agony and the ecstacy

The agony:

and the ecstacy:

The repaint is finished, with a few extra trimmings. Metallic blue like an '82 Trans Am got the most poll votes, so I added a twist- state pride with nevada colors: blue like the sky, silver like the comstock, and a shiny stainless steel headbadge brazed on to match. I'm afraid my city bike has gotten a little too nice for it's intended purpose... but damn it looks good. See more detail on velospace.

yep, rattlecan. it took two weeks to paint- 2 coats of primer, 2 of each color plus two coats of clear. i sandblasted the frame prior to painting.

the chainring is a suntour bmx from the late '70s. much better match now.

the paint is all duplicolor. it is best to keep the brands the same from primer to clearcoat, that way the chemistry is most compatible. the blue metal flake costs about $10 a can. the silver metallic and ultra white are both automotive touch-up colors. the key to rattlecan is to keep even strokes, and lay down a fog coat before laying in your color coat. clean everything you touch with acetone so you don't get fish eye or orange peel. sand primer with 800 grit, etc. oh, and buy the expensive masking tape, not the cheap stuff. not too hard, really...

Wow. That looks sweet.

Did you do the fork crown match-up too? If so how, as I'm getting mine back from the chrome-ers soon and will begin the repaint.

like i said in the "choose my new paint color" thread, old seatpost was stuck stuck stuck... i tried everything, including drilling a hole in the post and whaling on it with a slide hammer. in the end, heat was the trick. so it was a forced repaint. while i was at it, i set up ye olde buffing wheel and hit the aged cranks, replaced the sh1tty tien hsin headset with a buttery campy, changed the seat and post, and set up some new skins. oh, and went clipless. what a difference in control from skate shoes and toe clips to bike shoes and spd's... i never knew what i was missing.

fork crown was easy. paint won't stick worth a sh*t to chrome, and the crown logo was recessed enough for this trick to work. i sprayed over the whole logo on both sides, and let the paint dry to the point where it is still soft enough to scratch with a fingernail. i used a razorblade to gently scrape the paint off of the chrome. i could drag the edge right across the logo, since the logo is inset. then i used an xacto knife to clean up the edges. sounds harder than it actually is.

Looks beautiful! I see you already got a couple scratches on the downtube from the brake adjuster. I use a couple of wraps of bar tape finished with a wrap of colored electrical tape to avoid brake dingage.

Grey cloth covered with blue electrical tape would look ok on your bike I think.

very black-widowy. oozes evil kinda like forgetting to remove the plastic fangs before taking a drink and ending up with martini all over your rented red-lined cape sorta way, except a little more hip 'cause it's a fixie. more red would cure that, no doubt. maybe a tire accent?
