1978 Schwinn Superior Beater

It's cosmetically and mechanically rough but I don't expect to ever find a better one in my hometown. After being so pleasantly surprised by the Circuit earlier this year, I wanted to see what all the fuss is about with these fillet brazed frames. I bought it in the dark last night and took a few shots today before tearing it down.

I'll rebuild it and ride it. If it becomes a keeper then I can plan its better future; if not I'll sell it to one of you suckers......errr, fine gents.

A real mix of parts: Suntour RD, Huret FD and shifters, Atom pedals, Nervar crank/BB, Weinmann brakes and rims, Schwinn (Normandy?) hubs.......

We'll see.......

Pastorbob, I seem to recall you wanting a front reflector mount. If that's so and you see it hanging under the front of the stem, get in touch. You probably can better use it than me.

Looks pretty clean to me. Most of that grime will come off with little effort, and either oxalic acid or bronze wool can take care of the rust on the brightwork.

Don't you ever sleep? Your mommy will catch you. LOL.

Now I need the GC 450s more than ever.

That bike looks in good shape.

I've got a 72 Sports Tourer with some of the same components on it. I use mine as a utility bike to commute, shop, tour & to pull my kids in a trailer. I was going to replace the crank that came with 54/40 rings with a triple because I figured I could never find rings to fit, but talking to my LBS, he informed me that I could still get chainrings for the crank because the TA Pro Vis 5 (cyclotouriste) rings will fit. So know you have options in case you want to customize. I went with a 42/28 combo which I love. They really are wonderful bikes.

Cool info to know, Mr. Parker.

Is your pretty blue bike powdercoated?

Yes. When I bought it, it had been spray painted dark green. It was opaque green underneath. After removing a lot of the spray paint with acetone, I discovered why it was sprayed in the first place.

I tried to pick a color that was very close to an original color.

Yours looks in great shape. Clean up and enjoy! They really are very comfortable bikes.

I bought a lady's Varsity from a guy a few weeks ago and he just called me to say him mom had reminded him of these two old Schwinns that had been in her shed for the last 30 years and would I be interested in them. He couldn't remember which models they were but, but was thinking they were 'pretty much top of the line'. I'm patiently waiting for his next trip home. Nice find Julian.
