Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Attention all roadies...

...all roadies like cool things to customize their ride (don't they?). Ran across this while looking something else up and thought I'd share. Apologies in advance if you've already seen this site...

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

I'm not a roadie, but I want those skull and crossbone ones! Might even put tape on my bars just so I can use them!

Hey, you can probably use some tape/gasket material and shim 'em. We don't need no stinkin' tape! Huh, oh, I am a roadie, and I already have tape...

I could shim it, but I need to get some tape for winter anyways - bare steel is just too cold. But it does look really sweet on a track bike

I'm gonna get the Single Letter Deluxe Bar Plugs... which letters? "F" & "U"

I wish they had some with a turtle on 'em.

$8.00 - $11.00? That's a ridiculous amount of money for nothing but bar plugs. I'll take the free ones from my LBS. They haven't slowed me down yet. But, those with more money than brains....

Considering the bib number I acquired on yesterday's ride, I'm inclined to go for the Red Devil Bar Plugs.

You'll see me only in a defunct team's jersey.

When it comes to my bike, I don't care how it looks. I only require that it works perfectly. In fact, my road/training/racing bike might be considered as ugly as Hades. No decals anywhere on the frame or fork. No paint anywhere. No chrome adornments. Instead, a black saddle, black cables, black handlebar tape--and whatever bar ends that came with the tape. Not a speck of color, by design, anywhere. (Okay, I did buy tape once that had bar ends with world champion rainbow stripes.)

There is nothing that makes my bike pretty or the least bit flashy. It simply works very well. I will spend many thousands of dollars on functionality, but not one penny on mere style. And that's why I'll not put $8 bar ends on my $7500 bike. YMMV, as usual.

Actually, the way you describe it, sounds like the bike looks pretty cool. Let's see some pics

I just use the carbon ones I got when I bought some Zipp bar tape. Tape wasn't that good, but I like the plugs.

I think there is nothing wrong with a bike that looks sharp! What is wrong with a little style? Do you make yourself look ugly before you leave the house? There are certain things you can't change...and even now, with a some money I hear they can do wonders...but I don't wanta look like a slob...that said, my paramount does need a paint job! Great find Steerider!

Actually, it's the cheapest bike I've bought in the 20+ years I've been riding. Each of the four other frames I've owned needed replacing in 6 years, or less. Breakage, rust, and/or fatigue eventually took their toll on each frame. Given my Vortex is now a few years old, I very likely would already have replaced the frame at least once were it anything other than titanium. To buy once at $7500 (or less for frame only) is far smarter and cheaper than to buy four replacement frames at $2000 each. ($8,000 - $7500 = $500) I'll gladly keep that extra $500 bucks in my pocket. (Mind you, these are conservative figures. In reality, the savings would be greater.)

Sorry, but what you see here is a person with some brains, but a lot less money. I have to take the cheapest way out. I can't afford anything else.

I think you said you had a Vitus at one time? Did you really pay more than this for a Vitus? Was just wondering, as I don't really remember what these went for new...

Yes, and I'm being serious. Here's how it works...

You put 'em on, someone of your sexual preference that you find attractive notices 'em, strikes up a conversation, and now you're pumped up and riding faster!

The owner of the LBS from which I purchased the Vitus was a good friend. My memory is vague, but I think I paid approximately $400 for it. (But I also can't remember why I bought it, other than its low price. I had a Guerciotti at the time. Oh yes, it was the 80s--the decade of wretched excess and greed.) However, I meant to convey the average cost of a new frame today and in days yet to come. I admit my taste in frames has become a bit more upscale, too.
