A Detailed Review of the Motobecane Track Bike

So I could not find a really detailed review of this bike the way I like them. So here goes. I'll update this after a few longer rides.

I bought a Motobecane Track from BikeIsland. The bike is an older version described here Save Up to 60% Off Motobecane Singlespeed Bikes - 2012 Track Bicycles by Motobecane USA up to 60% Off and is not the one currently available (see Save Up To 60% Off Save Up To 60% Off Single Speed Fixie Track Bikes + Custom Colored Aero Rims 2015 Motobecane Track Custom Aero Rims +Free Brakes) which has a carbon fork.

There is a lot to like about this bike. Firstly it weights 18.8 pounds without pedals. I weighed and weighed it again since everywhere I read it was 21+ pounds for the 49cm size. I have size 54cm!

The pedals weight in at 400grams.
The handle bars at 412grams.
The front wheel (rim and tire) 1500grams.
The seat and post 452grams.

The back wheel was true but the front was not. The hubs were not greased too well so I fixed that.
The chain tension was way too tight so I loosed it up and tightened the lock ring.
The brake is for the back wheel so I shortened the cable and attached it to the front wheel.
The brake and pad is actually quite good.
Took one hour to set up.

This is my first time riding a track bike, but compared to my endurance style road bike, this bike felt zippy. Really quick off the mark. Being a steel bike it absorbed the road buzz but I didn't really try it on anything rough as yet. There is no toe overlap (yeah!) and the bottom backet was quite smooth and noise free. The rear cog (14t) makes a sound which ruins the experience of the silent ride a bit. The bike has a track geometry but is not twitchy which kind of disappointed me. I was expecting a more easy to maneuver bike than my endurance road bike which like this bike is rock stable.

The tires are Kenda 193 400 which actually get pretty good reviews so I may keep them.
The cockpit is a full Ritchie cockpit which was a pleasant surprise.

The seat was a crappy Velo seat but its fine for riding an hour at a time.

The pedals and straps were a bit small for my size 14 feet so will have to upgrade.

Overall I'm quite happy since I bought it for $229 shipped to my door. It was supposed to have scuffs on the chain stay and seat tube but I couldn't find any.

Who needs the Kilo:-) and the new Motobecane track.

I always thought those looked pretty nice. Can't say the same for the new model. Glad you like it. The handling is probably due to being fairly slack-angled and long in wheel base for a track bike. Should be nice to ride on the road. And yeah, why you no post pics?

Most of those "track" bikes are such in name only. About the only model being sold by BD that has fairly tight track geo is in infamous Kilo TT, and even it is quite flexible, so the ride on rough pavement is fairly comfortable. I you really want the handling and stiffness of a track bike, then get a real track bike/frame like a BK or Thunderdome.

Here are the pictures

Seat clamp is metal. Some people reported plastic

Bottom Bracket is well installed

Nice welds though a bit bubbly

Yellow bike and even yellow tire liners

How the bike comes uninstalled.

Just to be sure we are talking about this geometry https://www.motobecane.com/track/trk.html#geo not the current one on the website with a 72 degree head tube.

The one I have has this geometry

The road bike I I have has this geometry

EFFECTIVE TOP TUBE LENGTH 545
CHAIN STAY 420
BB DROP 71.1
FORK OFFSET 45
HEAD TUBE ANGLE 72.5
SEAT TUBE ANGLE 73.5
WHEEL BASE 994.6 1004.3
BB HEIGHT 268.4
FORK STEERER LENGTH 246
HEAD TUBE LENGTH 156

So the Track bike has 1 degree more upright head tube, 20cm shorter base and a shorter chain stay so I thought it would be more twitchy. Its not that I hate the Motobecane handling, its just very stable and not what I expected.

Isn't this making kind of a big deal over a bike that is no longer even available?

The sloppy handling is probably due the longish 40mm fork offset (rake), which calculates out to only 58mm trail with a 73.5 degree head angle and 700x23c tires. In comparison, my two Leaders have forks with 28mm, which provide more tracklike handling. Like I said, if you really want track handling, then get a real track bike.

As it turns out a friend has one. He took off the drops and has a flat bar on it, but I found the handling to be the same as the Motobecane Track.

Okay thanks. but there is typo right. It should be 73.5 degree head tube angle.

Also its true the rake (offset) is more like an endurance road bike. But everything else on this bike (BB drop, stays, head tube angle, shorter base etc.) is not like an endurance road bike. So I'm surprised its so stable. I'm not saying its sluggish, just handles solidly like my endurance road bike and I expected something more twitchy.

Loving this bike so far. Put close to 500 miles on it and love how stiff it is yet handles paved roads (not chip seal of course) really smoothly.

I've discovered counter steering and can now turn the bike very sharply, much more sharply than my road bike.

I'm still puzzled how come it weights so little (under 19 pounds) when everyone else says the Kilo weights less and the Kilo is reported as 22 pounds. I think ordering from BD is like pot luck but you are always have a minimal standard.

So the crank it comes with weighs less than SRAM red, Dura Ace, Cannondale SiSL, and S-works cranksets?

Yep, that's correct .... not. I meant pedals. Thank's for pointing out the bug. I fixed it.
